I just bought my Savage XL and got it broke in, ran about 10 tanks. My problem started when I leaned out the HSN. The truck would bog down because it was soooo rich, of course (from factory). So when I started to lean out the HSN the truck hit second gear, great. Then leaned a little more and finally hit third gear, but the temps go up to about 275 - 280. It runs a little hot. Many many people have the same problem with this K5.9 engine. When I looked at the truck for air leaks or anything else, the only thing I found was the convergent cone in the pipe was loose (wow). Called HPI and I have a new one on the way. A lot of blame is being put on the HPI stock pipe, because it's also for the previous Savages (too small). Seems like the CEN GST 7.7 pipe, and the OFNA 086 pipe are the two best options that people are trying in order to get more performance. I've just found out about a BUKU pipe, looks very good, not sure if anyone has tryed this on a Savage XL? I just don't see the performance I was hoping for, considering I've ran a gallon of fuel now. If anyone has any other ideas that would be great. (I believe the needle settings are good, I have not touched the mid, and only made 3/8 turn on the LSN).

275 to 280 is on the hot side, but not TOO hot. some mills just like running hotter. the savage is a big heavy truck and that mills is working hard to move it around.make sure you have ample airflow over the head and no binding in the drivetrain.

I have drilled a hole in the body and the drivetrain looks good, the truck runs well, and I can live without crazy speed or wheelies. But I would like to see the temps down a bit. I just noticed some youtube videos of guys replacing the stock pipe and getting a hugh increase in performance along with lower temps - mostly with the Cen pipe.

As long as it is smoking, not pinging or blowing plugs just run it where it performs. I run in the 260-270 range on all my engines, no problems.
Watch the pros, they do not even bother with temp guns.

They dont bother with temp guns because i think they rebuild their engines every 6 months... I bash, and i dont bother with temp guns ither. I received my savage xl today! Its sweeet!

I just won a buku pipe from the race I was at this weekend This pipe is awsome on the xl I was runing it today. can't wait till the next race

xl temps

hight temp is common to the xl.
try using the cen genisis pipe, it can be had on ebay, $20 or so
it will allow you to run at lower temps and better top end. with out having to lean it out to hi heaven, i've also used the ofna o86 buggy pipe, but a $60, its a little pricy.
