Hey. So I got a savage and have completed the break-in and tuning as well but whenever I start the engine there seems to be a metallic tingling sound inside the engine. The sound doesn't continue, it appears just after I leave the button on the rotor start. However, if the engine starts, the sound disappears. The sound is more like 'dropping an aluminum fork on the tiles'.

The sound may be coming from the clutch bell. The bell will often "ring" and give that tingling sound when starting the engine.

Yep its coming from the motor and its normal. The Savage X normally comes with a brass spacer between the CB and the screw, it could be them bouncing off each other. My other thought is that it could be the clutch springs hitting the bell as the savage comes with teflon shoes.

Heres the sound I believe your talking about, listen to the ringing sound

The sound only comes when the engine does not start. So, is it normal?

Sorry..but another question. I cleaned my truck today and when i tried pushing it backwards, i noticed a strange sound from the clutchbell. (Only when moving back). Moreover, when i push the car forward, the transmission spur gear doesn't spin (actually, its the entire transmission) however, when i rotated it with my finger, the truck moved forward. Is this normal or have i broken something?...I'm worried!

When you roll the truck forward the spur shouldn’t spin (may spin slightly but you should be able to hold the spur and it not try to spin when rolling forward) the OWB for the 2 speed in the transmission lets the truck free roll in forward but will spin the spur if you roll it backwards.

A strange noise in the bell when rolling backwards or spinning the spur by hand indicates a clutch problem like bad bearings/shoes/spring(s), you need to investigate.

Thank you very much. Do I need to remove the engine to investigate? Cause I'm afraid if it would affect the mesh.

Yep, thats the only way to get a look at the clutch and bearings.

You will never learn to set the mesh with out trying/practice.

That doesn’t sound like a clutch problem to me; more like the gear mesh (clutch bell and spur) may be too tight.

When you set the mesh you want just a slight amount of play/lash between the 2 gears. Hold the clutch bell with a finger and rock the spur back and forth, you should hear a slight ticking sound and feel a slight amount of play between the 2 gears.
Check the mesh around the entire diameter of the spur by simply rotating it to ensure there is no tight spot(s).

The paper method to set the mesh will get you close when you are new to the hobby, but it is usually too tight and requires a slight adjustment.

Okay, the first sound you referenced is just the gear box for the back plate. It kind of freaked me out when I first started it, but it is normal. This of course assuming once you start it with your roto-start, you hear a loud 'ting'. I'm pretty confident this is what you are referencing, correct?

The second sound (in your video) is your gear mesh as was noted.

Yup that's right. And ...about the gear mesh, I set it again but I can still hear the sound. Is it because of the steel spur?

Definitely. Steel spur gears will always be a bit loud even when meshed correctly.

Temp guns are not the most accurate. You're really just wanting one that is consistent. That being, once you get the engine tuned to your liking, take the temp and that gives you and idea of what it should run at. I use the Losi Temp Tuner. It's inexpensive and has a nice slotted driver.
