Been having a problem with my eBay Savage X not shifting, and generally not performing to expectations. Decided to take it apart today for a but of investigation.

Wasn't quite prepared to find what I found (see pictures 🤢)

Is it worth rebuilding this one with a new casing, aluminum gears etc or am I better off just buying a complete replacement? Are these transmissions prone to issues or is there really no need to upgrade.

I'm not bothered about more low end/high end power, as I haven't even seen what it can do standard yet 😆

Appreciate any input.

For $50, I’d buy a new one and part this one out.

To be honest, I don’t know what all that stuff is. All 4 of my savage x transmission's are packed with grease so I’ve never seen anything like that.

In my experience, no they are not prone to the carnage displayed by your example.
I've never seen one so torn up and with holes in the case.

Yours reflects problems caused by heat and friction - exactly what the source is can be argued.
Every so often, a bearing may seize up (or be partially seized) - that can introduce heat - as can a misadjusted spur gear - and then there's the dirt/grit...

Your spur gear needs a new friction pad and the nut completely tightened and then backed off a quarter turn when you assemble it.
I have a buddy who leaves his completely torqued down - which kinda defeats the purpose of the friction pad arrangement, but you can adjust your driving (landing) style to more or less accommodate.

I’d just buy a new one. Gears and all.
Yep - and you're already of that mindset...

Someone has definitely been in there before, I suspect it may not have been reassembled correctly, much like the rest of the truck unfortunately.

With the money I've spent on this one I may as well have bought a new one 😆 I certainly haven't been as lucky as I have with all my other cars, even the MT2! 😆

Win some, lose some as they say! She'll be a ripper when she's back together, I just know it!

Thanks both :D

Yeah affordable and savage x don’t belong in the same sentence. I own three savage X’s. None were cheap to fix up.
