Savage x 4.6 spur problems

If everything is in good working condition:
There are basically 3 reasons for stripping a spur.

1- Mesh set incorrectly (most common)
2- Something moved while running resulting in a misaligned mesh…
3- Tight slipper/on throttle landings (usually broken teeth, not stripped)

Are you using locktite and letting it cure on the engine mount screws? Have you had anyone check the mesh after you set it?
If there was a problem/binding in the drive train that was bad enough to lead to a stripped spur, that problem would have most likely have failed and shown itself by now.

Thanks for the reply snook

I feel sure the mesh has been good every time, if I set it nitrobuzzard would check it, and if he set it I would check it.
I was thinking something may have been moving, but, everything is tight after the spur strips. The last time it striped I cleaned the engine mount bolts and applied thread locker.
As for the slipper it's set the same way I've always set my savages. Isn't it still the same trans as the savage 21 and 25?

Check to see if any of you driveshaft screw pins have work themselves loose cause the driveline to bind anywhere.
A lot of people will swear that it's improper mesh, I was having the same problem, so I just changed to steel spurs. At first I was using RRP steel spurs, but now I've started using HPI steel spurs. Now that I use them they fail far far less.

Basically all the same (just need to adjust slipper tension to match engine output).

I run a locked slipper on my Savages and put 8 gallons on a stock spur last year with big power pushing it. Spur still has plenty of run time left.

I had this problem on a Savage before and it was a slightly warped motor plate. It looked good until I pulled everything apart and notice the plate was slightly off. I put a new mounting plate and never had trouble again.

So have you run it where mesh seemed good...then it stripped....then check to see if mesh still seemed good? Also, when it strips...how bad is it?

Lots of things can prevent you from setting good mesh...but the number of things to cause you to lose your mesh is less significant. If I understand your mesh is good....but you keep loosing it....correct?

I understand how frustrating crap like this can be....never hurts to have a second pair of eyes on it. Hell, send it to me and I'll take a look. Might sound odd--but the offer is there. Just let me know.

Guy on another forum with a Hyper 7 who could not stop his engine (P5) from running hot, even though it was tuned right. I walked him through everything but it continued...then eventually he got fed up and sent it to me. I got it...tuned the engine...same stuff. Temps continued to go up. I broke it down and realized his ring/pinion mesh was off up front--problem solved. Never hurts to have a second pair of eyes on it. Just don't sell the Savage. ;-)

I don't understand how I can check the mesh after it strips, if there is no teeth on the spur, how do I check the mesh???

Hahahha, your on to something cause my HPI LCG kit savage never smoked a stock spur either, but the motor plates are thicker with the complete kit.

Wow. Okay. Just trying to help. Did not realized you stripped all the teeth on it (why I asked how badly). I've only stripped a spur once...and but it had teeth on it. Anyway, good luck. Hope you get it solved. Should be an easy fix.

Messed with the savage again today. Smaxxin, I think you hit the nail on the head. Pulled the plate out and sure enough it was twisted. Don't know how I missed it when I changed the tvp's. Couldn't straighten it out very well, so I got a new one on the way. Will update when it comes in. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks guys!

Smaxxin you the man! Thanks brother, i would've never thought of that probably.

Amazing, it wasn't the mesh...lol

Finally got a full tank of fuel run through it today...MBR is sooo happy, i don't think it's for sale anymore...lol

hello everyone I'm new to this site and the rc world I have a savage x and experienced the same type of problem stripping spur gears the way I fixed my problem was to replace the plastic spur gear with a metal one and it works fantastic no problems at all since

Welcome to RCNT.

A metal SG will, most of the time, seem to fix issues people are having with their SGs, but a lot of the time they are just covering up an underlying issue. Most are ruined from improper gear mesh, too loose will cause it to skip teeth and too tight will cause excess wear/heat until the teeth give out. The other common cause is damage, anything from a slightly bent chassis or trans input shaft to a tweaked engine mount. If any of these issues are there you WILL destroy a metal SG or your CB, it will just take longer and cost more to fix. Steel spurs are also known for eating stock CBs, you really need to run hardened CBs when running steel SGs. With proper mesh a plastic gear will last plenty long enough, we have many guys running high powered rigs and are still using plastic spurs with no issues. This is why we never recommend just getting a steel spur when having issues, you have to find the cause first.

Hey guys. I am having continuous problems out of my savage. The spur keeps stripping. I know the mesh is right, I've changed the twisted tvp's, even found screws backed out of the upper half of the transmission case, put a new slipper set up on it, new bearings and bushings on the clutch bell, and shimed the clutch bell. Got all that repaired/replaced and I take it out today run about 5 min and the awe fully dreaded "zing" yet again. Any others had this problem? Any suggestions? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Mud
If your running stock spures and you have a good tune no matter what you do it will eat that spur.go with a good spur like hot racing or robinson racing set they make a little noise but its worth it
