Savage vs Tmaxx upgrades

I'm looking at getting my first MT and I'm leaning towards the Savage25 because I really want durability and strength, however I'm worried that the Savage25 wont be as fast as the Tmaxx2.5. Can the Savage25 be hopped up to run as fast as the Tmaxx, are there just as many upgrades available for the Savage as the Tmaxx? Is the difference is speed really noticable out of the box? What do you guys recommend I do

1. Buy the Savage and spend money making it faster or
2. But the Tmaxx and make it stronger/more durable?

Thats the dilemma I'm in. I really like the savage though, size, body, suspension, etc.....but I'm worried about speed
 
Personally I would go with the Savage and drop in a Pico .26 or Hyper 8 port.

However, you can't go wrong with either option.
 
well if you concerned about speed.. then get the savage 25 and buy different gearing... that's all... overall the Savage has mad torque and made to perform off road

I say get the savage 25 or the SS the 25 engine has a lot of power and is very controlable throw an 18tt cb on it and it will be more then fast enough to leave a coating of dust on the tmaxx if you still fell the need for more speed get the picco 26 or the wasp 26 an 18t cb and the 49t spur and you'll get the savage over the 50mph line with no problem.
I'm currently running 18/52 gearing with a picco26 in my savage and i've been clocked at 48.8 mph more then enough to slap some embaresment onto the 2.5 guys I run with.
 
That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm going to pick up my savage tomorrow and run it for a while with everything stock. Then ill look at the other engines. How much do those engines run price wise? I can probably go atleast 2-300 on a new engine?
 
If you have a GOOD LHS you can pickup the Picco .26 for 150$ American.

They are a lot less expensive than people think :thumbup:
 
I think the whole speed issue concerning a T being much faster than a Savage got started the .21 days. With the .25 out there now, those days are over (Stock to Stock) Don't get me wrong, they are both very capable trucks and each has their pros/cons - but speedwise, they are on very even playing fields now. Then there's the upgrade issues - well you got the hardened gearing for monster motors on the Savage - so you can go nuts with upgrades without breaking stuff (so I hear).
 
6 of 1 half dozen of the other.

I would recommend upgrading BOTH stock engines for BOTH the Savage and the TMaxx out of the box. The 2.5 is good 50% of the time. I see them at the LHS 'ALL THE TIME' because they are not dependable. Then the .21bb stock Savage mill is good, but lacks long term high end power and needs to be yanked. I havent run the new .25 Savage but if thats not only stronger but of more quality, then I could safely say its on par with the power of the 2.5 if not better (in terms of plain power). The big thing to remember, as with ANY 'RTR' vehicle, the 'RTR' mills usually come up short. Thats in the eyes of the enthusiast. To the average Joe Wally Nitro Newbie it probably doesn't make a difference.
 
well my LHS finally did a test on which is better outta the box.. the T-MAX 2.5 vs Savage 25.. both claim speeds up 40+mph...

"UP TO 40+mph"

turns out that both can do that just that the Savage 25 gets there faster while the T-Max does do 40+ just takes a while...

but for the T-Max in order to put in a big block you have to buy a conversion kit... in total it will cost more than the Savage 25.. then you would have to buy a big block which will make it cost even more.. as for the Savage 25 you can keep it as is.

durability, like it was posted already "I've seen more T-Maxx in the repair center then Savage" granted T-MAXX has been out longer and more customers have them, just that I've seen most of them broken in half... I really like how the Savage is built.

Both trucks the most common part broken are the Front Lower Arms.. but you can beef it up by getting Aluminum Lower arms WITH Aluminum bulk Head.. if you don't have this combination you will still break either plastic part... just never seen a savage broke in half...
 
Tmaxx is old news. You can hardly sell them anymore, even when you got the bad ass hop ups. Choose a Savage or a BFT stay away from Traxxas.
 
i got a t-maxx, or now a supermaxx. i do not like traxxas that is why i am getting away from all of their stock parts. i really liek Unlimited enginerring and their supermaxx parts. i have done the conversion and stuck the XTM 24.7 engine in it. it flys!!! i have yet to see a savage .25 run but i am pretty sure it would be a good race.

I picked up my Savage25 the other day and have been having a blast breaking it in. I burnt up two one ways allready though, bagged the rotostart and put on a pull start. I'm so glad i didnt get the tmax!
