I have a Savage21 with an 8port in it and it WAS shifting perfectly. For some reason it stopped.I can't figure it out.I've adjusted the set screw, retuned the engine, tor the tranny apart 6 times and still no luck. The finger clutch seems to be working right,it's not in backwards. The set screw is out 5 turns right now and no luck.Does someone have a clue what i'm doing wrong.

This may be a stupid question, but is the hardened pin that the shift lever seats on there (damaged, worn, ect)? I would hazard a guess that you have examined the lever, and it swings without binding, but at 5 turns out, how easy is it? You didn't say, and I can only assume that your truck drives in first (low) gear, but I might be wrong. If it is in second all the time, I would try running the screw all the way in and backing out 3 turns and retuning it from there.

The catch pin is their and is in good shape. The finger comes out without binding and at five turns out it's still pretty stiff. The truck is driving in first gear.I know it's first because it wheelies and accelerates fast it just doesn't shift into second.I've tried adjusting the set screw everywhere from 2 turns to 6 turns and everything in between with no luck.At 7 turns it seems to start out in second because my acceleration is sluggish and top speed increases.

Man, I hate to say it, but you might, and I stress might, need a shift clutch rebuild kit. I did that on mine once, and it made it shift better. But it really sounds like either the spring under the set screw or the ball between the spring and lever isn't working properly. If it just goes from 1st and no 2nd, to all 2nd in just 1 turn, that might be the problem. You've weeded out most of the other possables.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Whitt....

*update* Rex, if this post didn't make any sense, I think I got confused and thought I was replying to another similar thread.

But I'd still check out that spring and ball.

Well, that's like my suggestion, but amped on steroids, but that just might fix it.

It started out after it got warm and I retuned my engine. It was shifting funny and I could barley hear it shift but it was shifting. Then it was shifting fine and now it's not shifting at all.I've checked just about everything I could check. The finger looks like it's working fine.It springs back and the spring isn't damaged from what I can see.

Man, this one has me stumped. I'd contact HPI support on the phone and see what their tech have to say. Who knows, you might get a whole new tranny from them.

I think i've traced the root of my problem to my Slipper. It's slpping alot. It's tightened all the way up it still slips alot.I just changed it 4 tanks ago because the pad was DESTROYED.The engine revs like it's wound out in second only it does it from a stop? Can I add another Pad to the slipper or will it just do the same thing?Could that be the reason it's not shifting...because the slipper is still slipping at high speed and it's not enough to make the tranny reach the right RPM's?

Sounds like that is a plausable theory. If the spur is spinning easily, the bronze bushing in the center of the spur may have gotten hot and melted the spur. The pressure of the tension spring more than likely has pressed the bushing towards the tranny and the nut runs out of thread before enough tension can be applied to the slipper to properly engage the tranny. I have had this happen. One solution is to find, or modify a washer to put under the spring and special washer (that has a hex hole in it) to compress the spring more so that the slipper functions properly. Otherwise, I'd just get a new spur (and pad that comes with it) and replace it.

One thing that isn't really pointed out in the manual is the proper adjustment of the slipper. On a new spur, tighten the slipper adjustment nut all the way in, then back off 1/8th to 1/4 turn and no more, The slipper should slip, but not easily, and certainly not by hand. I run about 1/4 turn and have not had any problems.

I replaced that bushing with a bearing long ago.The spur/pad are new.The last one was destroyed so I changed it but I guess i'll have to take it off and check this one out too.I tightened it all the way and backed it off 1/8 turn but it's slipping under heavy acceleration and i'm not sure if it keeps slipping once it gets up to speed. If it is i'm sure that is the cause of my shifting problem.BTW I'm using a HYper21 8 port on my Savage.

I had a Hyper 8 on mine also. Sounds like you've set everything up right. The only other thing I can think of would be glazing in the clutch bell.

LOL nope I have a 3 shoe setup and I just scuffed it a few days ago lol.I'm just gonna keep adjusting it and see if I can at least get it to poop at some point. If that doesn't work i'll take it apart again and check the finger clutch or just replace it.

Yeah, it might be constipated. j/k. I'm stumped man, Maybe if some of the other guys came in here and made some suggestion we might be able to help ya more.

You might have tried this but it helped me when I adjusted my shift when I installed my picco. Put it on blocks and then give it gas slowly and lessen for it to shift. When I tried to do it on the ground it was not as noticeable mine is staying in 1st for like 3 secs. on WOT runs.

IT SHIFTS!!!!!!!!!!! At 3 1/2 turns out it shifts?????It's a little late and I can't hear it very well but it shifts!!!!!!!!!!!! Now if only my Adrenaline tank guard would get here so I could mount my Ofna tank and tune it properly i'll be set.I don't know what was wrong with it???Maybe it was constipated

Cool beans dude! Glad it's working again. Now go drive that thing like ya stole it!

Just got done doing that LOL now I gotta clean up the mess I made of it LOL:yes:
