Has anybody thought of doing it? I've heard lots of stories of the fuel tanks cracking at its position, and moving it to the center gives it was more protection. So, anybody do it? I was thinking of it, and it also looks cool IMO in the middle. Does anybody know what I'll need for me to do it (I don't want to get the I-RC kit, it seems like a rip-off)?

there have been many mid tanked savages on these pages, as well as other forums. A search should bring up a pic or 5. my buddy had a really nice one, ill see if i can find a pic of it.
 
I did a midtank mod on my savage a few years ago here are a few pics for referance. The battery is mounted just infront of the front shock tower and the radio gear is mounted behind the shock tower. the boxes used are from the HPI Rush. to mount the servos I used RPM servo mounts for the Tmaxx.
