Hi, I have a HPI Savage 25. I am having nothing but problems getting this thing started. I got it from a friend. Had no remote, manual etc. I am no using a JR remote and servos. I had it running but knew nothing about carb tuning. I was only adjusting the needle valve which I now know is the high throttle adjustment, didn't even know their was a low throttle. The problem is I can't even get the thing started again. Does any one know the factory settings or what I should do to get it running again. I am using 20 percent fuel and have tried low and medium glow plugs. I just need to get it to kick over so I can play with the settings. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Also I have a nine year old son. What electric four wheel drive truck do you recommend I but him. thanks

here you go bud

for the glow plug, try to stick with a cold plug.if ur trying to run this in the cold, try out a medium plug. but if the temps out side are around 45+ you should be just fine on a cold plug running 20 %. i may be wrong though, someone else will more then likely help u out a bit more on the glow plug question

electric 4 wheel drive truck for your son?

checked out the traxxas e-maxx?

You can get the full manual on this site and it has very usefull info on factory settings........I suggest get the kid an E-Savage as they are very tough. My boy is 10 and he has his own Savage SS, I consider him very lucky and we have a blast running them together. He can pretty much get it going himself.:)

Bring it back to factory settings and go from there.
It will be rich, and probably still not run very good. Just lean it a little at a time. Clockwise leans it out. 1/8 of a turn or so. Doesn't take much.

reply

It just keeps turning over with no spark. Is there any type of internal damage that could have occurred. The engine seams pretty basic except for the carb. I will give it another shot tomorrow. There should be some set up, tuning videos that would make this alot easier. :surrender:surrender

Have you checked the glo plug? Try taking it off and igniting it separately. It should glow bright orange. If not, its toast.

Let us know.

I suggest a MC59 hot plug.

:surrenderThis is a continuation of my other thread savage 25. I have a good glow and the engine is trying to turn over but it seems to be spitting alot of fuel out the carb and exhaust. I pulled the pipe and there is alot of fuel spitting. The engine kicks like it is trying to start up but seems to be flooded real bad. Any tips.

remove the glow plug from the engine. now pintch the fuel pipe attached t0 the crab. now pull start or use a starter and crank the engine for not more then 5 seconds. do this 2 or 3 times. you will find fuel being spitted out of the glow opening.now fit the plug back. ow try starting by connecting the glow igniter.

If it's flooded badly, do like abs said but also attach the glow plug to the ignitor while it's out and burn off all the excess fuel. Sometimes it's better to swap in a fresh plug, but save the old one,as long as it glows you should be able to use it later.

still having trouble

I finally got the engine to run for a couple of seconds. I still think it is flooding because of all the fuel spitting out of the carb and the exhaust. I am manually moving the throttle and it is getting fuel while I crank it over. I have the high speed needle at four turns out and the low about three. I am adjusting each independantly as I turn the engine over. When I finally got the engine to start I had replaced the glow plug with a medium heat and not a cold plug. I dont know if that had anything to do with it or not. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks. :surrender

Check You Hsn It May Be Broken ......... Not Too Sure

Correction Check Your High Speed Needle ............. Not To Sure

Hey Drunkinjun try this!!!!!!!!!

Check compression of motor if comp.is low it will let fuel pass through the engine.
Make sure glo plug igniter is fully charged or has new battery
Install new glow plug (MC-59)
Check fuel to see if it is fresh (fuel will go stale with age or improper storage.I use Sidewinder 30% Race Blend)
Set Carb adjustments to factory break in settings
HSP needle Turn in till it stops then turn out 4 1/2 turns
MID Range needle flush with outer case
LSP needle turn in till it stops then turn out 3 turns
Idle adjustment screw turn in or out till you get a 2mm gap between carb body and carb slide when slide is in the idle position
Try starting motor if it srarts let motor warm up to operating temps then make the fine tuning adjustments
Good luck and remember these motors can sometimes be annoying and hard on the nerves when they won't run!!!!! BE PATIENT lol

what

What is the mid range needle on the hpi .25. I know where the high speed needle is and low range. I beleive the idle is the one directly underneath the high speed needle. I am going out to the garage and try it again. How do I check compression.

There is no Mid Range needle on the Nitro Star 25. Are talking about the idle set screw?

Have you tried restoring this back to factory settings?

tried it

I adjusted all the settings back to factory. The engine will start up occassionally but only after cranking for a long time. Should I be running a hot plug medium or cold. I have adjusted all the carb valves. It seems like it is getting closer but no cigar. Any help. :surrender

Don't worry about cold, hot or in between plugs right now.
It's firing, just too rich, right?

Factory settings on both needles.
Don't mess with both of them. Only the high-speed for now.
This help? http://www.rchobbies.org/cars_eng-tuning.htm
I had more, but can't find them.

yah

It seems to be too rich. when it starts up it races like I have the trottle full out. The longest I got it to run is about five seconds before it cuts out. I talked to a guy and he said I shouldn't be running Traxxas 33% on the HPI engine. He said he has had nothing but trouble running that fuel on the HPI. He said I should switch to top fuel 30% and run a hot plug since the average temperature is about 45 degrees where I live. What do you think. Any help. :surrender
