I've been doing some research for a guy at the track with the Savage .21. It got pretty cool outside by the end of the day, but his engine hit 320. I did some tweeking on his needles since he wasn't getting good performance either, and by leaning the LSN he got his bottom end punch, and richening the HSN, the temp came down to 295. Any richer and it ran poorly.
What's the happy spot for this engine? It was about 55 out, and I didn't expect it to be running this hot.
Someone said these engines like to be about 300. Any truth to that?
It got too dark to see what kind of smoke it was putting out, so it's been put off for now.

300 degrees sound WAY too high to me. I wonder if he has an airleak? How was the idle? Do you know how many gallons the engine has had? Engines do weird things when the piston get worn too much.

The idle was good. It stayed consistant. After adjusting his LSN, I let it sit and idle till the temp didn't rise any more. It topped out at 211 and stayed there.
A few weeks ago I sealed another engine he had for a Truckzilla conversion, a 4.6, but the .21 did not show any signs of an air leak.
I don't know how much this ones been run, but it was still strong.

I have never had to tune my .21 other than a tweak or two.

I am not sure how hot it runs down at the plug because I've never hit it with the temp gun. The heat sink up top however is rarely too hot tap with my finger for a heat check. The spit test always evaporates slow off the heatsink, never noils or pops..so I am assuming it is running somewhere around 210-230 after some hard play.

I have stock tires and gearing. One thing about the savages is that gas tank is easy to crack and not notice. I think the shock tower is what causes that. Maybe a slight leak in the tank?

I did notice that needle changes took quite sometime to effect the temp/performance. A lot longer to take effect than any of my small blocks.

I'll volunteer to take a temp gun check of my ride if need be, it's about 45-55deg outside here in the day time.

Okay, Lykan, I'd appreciate a temp when your engine is performing well, so I know about where it should be. I'll also do a pressure test for him, just to make sure.
