Who has done it? I am looking to do this but I can't find the proper case that will retain the same accessibility the X is known for.

Speak up. I have called HPI and their support line is too long to wait for when I am at work...

I emailed HPI a while ago and you can buy the 3 speed kit and it'll fit in the savage X tranny case I was told.

I did snail mail em too but have yet to confirm. I don't want to commit to a 3 speed unless it will retain the ease. Besides I plan on getting the STS30 to get the most out of the mill.

So If I get the kit with the case... I just would use the stock X case and 86 the 3 speed case? Is that possible?

Jon, when I put the 3-speed in my Savage 4.6 it fit in the stocker case just fine. I know HPI sells one that is assembled and one that isn't, so I imagine the unassembled one would fit in the stocker case.

Not saying it wouldn't fit in guys, I am sure it will but has anyone done this can confirm the sameease to remove? The X is known for its ease in maintaining.

maintainance would be the same as with the 2 speed the only difference is that u would have to remove the gears to adjust 1-2 shift point which you would have to do which ever case you have X or old style

I bought the 3 speed kit,not the complete, and I'm pretty sure on the box, that it say's it fit's the x/.25 models. Ill double check

Dang

Dang Jon, already "soupin" that X up are ya?

I have a bud that put the assembled 3 speed in his X and has had no problems so far.

Update, I just talked to HPI racing FINALLY!. They say that the only way to retain the accessibility if the tranny is to purchase the 3 speed kit and install that way. If you get the assembled kit, the accessibility is taken away.

I will let you kn ow how it goes.

Jon

Ok the Savvy X is stuck. I have taken her apart back and forth. Am I and dolt or what????? The gearshaft( one that holds the brakes ) is straight not moving. Anyone have this issue? I put the 3 speed kit in the tranny to retain the cool X tranny case. Now it doesn't move. I originally thought it was the diffs but they spin fine I suspect the tranny....

Opinions???

Did you put the correct gear (stock is 1 tooth smaller than the one that comes with the three speed, and a little thicker) on the bottom shaft? Make sure all are meshed before final assembly?

I'm gettin ready to drop in a 3 speed and reverse module into Christine.. err, my savage.

Hope that helps you track down the problem!

As far as I can say, I have used all new stuff except the shafts and an e-clip.

Hmmm... and you seated the middle shaft and made sure it rotated freely before setting in the topshaft?

Followed the directions to do it. I also installed the DD brakes on this as well. I remove them and it spins freely but after a while it starts getting tighter. WTH? The disk brakes are real loose, I canwiggle each disk brake fine

Could you perhaps have the brake linkage too tight?

Have you tried taking the top shaft out of the trans, as well as the middle shaft, and spinning the remaing drivetrain, to see what it does?

The only thing I can think of is perhaps you got your dogbones mixed (front center in the rear, and vice-versa).

Tried that too but it is set correct

The remaining shaft is the one I am talking about. It does not spin.

As for the linkages... they have yet to be put on..

is the trans in the truck or out of it still? Sounds like you used too short of a screw on the dual brake disk setup. Are the screws long enough to permit the discs to rotate freely?

I went with the new srews in the 3 speed kit. LOL I made sure about that. as far as the tranny in our out, it is out. I am going nucking futs!!! Thanks HB for helpin out. I am just impatient. I am going to wait for a bit but I am thankful on the responses man.

I know how ya feel - I'm just havin a hard time visualizing it. The only things I can think of is the disc brake clamp-bars being too tight to the disks, or possibly the gear is too large for the case (doubt it).

Have you tried to remove the brake discs completely off the trans case and try to spin it then?

If it makes ya feel any better, my reverse module was the same way; it was locked up for some unknown reason. Turns out one of the gears was sitting tooth-top-to-tooth-top with another.

But if your trans only has the bottom shaft in it, and that's not rotating, the only thing that could be locking it up is the brake setup. Perhaps fit little springs between the brake plates, to push them apart?
