Alright guys, I need some ideas here. Two times have run my trucks in the sand on the beach and two times it completely removed the pinion gear on my clutch bell. Once on my 2.5 Maxx and then my Revo 3.3. It looks like I need something with enclosed gears. And I want to stay with nitro. I found a Tamiya Nitrage 5.2 but it looks like that thing is discontinued. (and I don't think I want a Tamiya anyway!) Does anyone know of another that has enclosed gears or do I need to fabricate something to keep the sand off my gears?

The two trucks that come to mind are from Losi. The aftershock and the xxl. As far as I know the spur and clutchbell are enclosed with a plastic cover. However the xxl does carry a hefty price tag of around 670 no matter where you shop. The aftershock is better on the wallet being only 400. For the amount of money you'll spend on the xxl, I would rather get a baja since I own one. Not going to plug the baja here but just going to say its a nice truck and the gears are enclosed.

Who makes the Baja?

HPI, but it still get sand in the wheel bearings and in all the nooks and crannies. Not to mention the air filter. I ran in sand once with my Baja. That was enough.

When I lived down in Apalachicola a few years ago, I never ran in the sand. That's just something your gonna have to deal with really. These little rigs may have paddle tires for them, but that sand will destroy your rig in the long run. These cars arent made for sand driving, too small for that.

The aftershock isn't completely enclosed the back is open. However RPM make a complety sealed cover for it front and back and you can still easily get to the slipper. It's about $10 and a good purchase, well if you have an aftershock that is.

I run in sand 50% of the time and have yet to eat a clutch bell gear.

Get rid of the steel spur gear for a plastic spur or invest some hardned steel clutch bells.

I don't care what brand/model you get sand will find a way in, maintinance is the key.

I also lived in South Florida for years and ran in sand with open spur/clutch bells and never had an issue with gears due to sand.
