?'s about 30% nitro

Anyone run 30% nitro?? If you do, do you notice any difference in wear on the engine? glow plug? anything? I run 30% nitro and i can't get a glow plug to work properly. I have tried a handful of brands. I know to use a cold plug with the high nitro. I've tried O'donnel 99's, O.S. A-5's & R-5's , and finally Mccoy mc 9's. I have tried these plugs in both my wasp .26 and Hyper .21 8 port. Now my 8 port needs a long plug so I have settled with the MC 9's, but I can't get them to last. What the hell??? Is it just the 30% or what? I have also added a head shim on the hyper cause i couldn't even keep it idleing, now it does idle awesome, but still goin thru glow plugs. Any ideas?? :shrug:

ok i have to ask this.do you know how to tune a mill??
because to me it sounds like a tuneing problem

you should stick to 20% till you get running right then make the switch so you can tell if there was any diffrenances, you may have some tuning issues..may wanna post more info

As for the first question, about tuning, yes I know how to tune an engine, maybe better then alot of the guys that I see trying to do thier deal. I, unlike alot of the guys I run with, am slow and patient. Start rich and let it warm up like a half tank, then start to adjust. I do it by ear, performance, and smoke. I only use my temp gauge to watch for drastic changes in temp, and to make sure it is not over heating after i do find a good tune. On this last MC-9, I think that i actually tried to start a flooded engine, and effed up the plug.
Now for the second statement, I have ran 20%, but that was in my T-maxx. I sold that, when i bought my savage, ran the rest of my 20 in the stock engine. When I bought my wasp .26 the guy at the lhs said that i would be extremely happy with 30% in that mill. He was right. it run good. but maybe it is just the crappy o'donnel plugs that i kept buying. The mill that i have tried all the rest of the plugs on was that hyper .21 8 port. Now that i found the right plug for that, I was just wondering if anyone else has similar occurences with the 30%, that's all.

Its harder to tune running 30%, I ran Trinity Platinum 30% for about a year and noticed a power gain but it was iffy to tune. I would have to retune before every heat in a race and several times in a bash session.

I agree... However, if ya run anything over 25% nitro you should run a cold plug, especially in a high compression engine. the mc8 is a medium-hot plug, which will flame out do to the higher nitro content, and the high compression. As far as the trinity platnium fuel is concerned, trinity themselves advertise that the platnium blend is more finikee to tune due to the lack of lubricant (10%) unlike their monster h.p. which is 12% lube, and for the basher who doesn't like to have to be tunin' all the time they have the monster brew with 16% lube. So I would say that the hard tuning is actually the particular fuel being used, not the percentage of nitro, IMO. Thanks to all of you who have given me input, anyone else???

I just made the switch to 30% about a month ago and I love it! I run it in my Fantom .27, Picco .26, XTM 24.7, Hyper 21 8 port, GS .21 and my T-15 all with great results. I really noticed that it cleared up all the little studder on the bottom end and actually caused lower running temps. I run the MC9 cold plug in all of those engines. I did notice that I am going through plugs a little faster now so I would say that is normal. Just the price you gotta pay for a little more performance.

BTW, no shims added to either engine and no idling, tuning probs with any of them. Actually even broke the Fantom, Hyper and T-15 in with the 30%. I'll never use anything else again

elway, so you have ran 20% in the picco .26? i have a wasp .26 on its way right now..and have been reading that it runs better off of 30% compared to 20%, with out even adding a shim. anyone else out there have experience with the .26's and these nitro contents?

I also have a Wasp .26 , and the guy at the lhs told me to run 30%, and add no shims. it runs awesome, since now i found a plug that works for me. It is the O.S. A-5, it has lasted longer then the odonnel 99's. Not too sure about Mcoys, but if you do run the 30%, then definitaly use a cold plug.

Yeah, you definately wanna run a cold plug on the 30%. The MC9 Mccoy works great and is fairly inexpensive compared to some others.
Yes, i did run 20% in the Picco before the 30% and there really was a noticeable difference in performance. Not a huge difference, but noticeable. Mostly on the throttle response on the low end. I really like it.
Also, is it just me or does it seem like you go through a gallon of 30% quicker than the 20%?
