rebuild .21 osrg, do i have to replace the crank if there is rust on it?

i am pretty sure that u will have to replace it because i think that the rust will mess with the motor if ran. but i am not positive of this.

Clean it off.. thats what I would do... If you dont wanna buy a new one even though you probibly dont need one.

thanks for finally answering my question. i've only had this on here for about twenty days. i was thinking about using some sort of rust inhibitor and then having it polished, but i'm still not sure that will work. i haven't done anything to the motor yet, just been sitting back, waiting for a reply. the piston and sleeve look good though. just wondering if i can clean it off, or is it cheaper to buy another?

Oh, you were talking about an engine part....

Sorry, wasn't going to come into this one...

Rust on any part does not necessarily require a replacement, but when it is an internal to an engine you could go either way. The important thing it to give it a good polishing with some oil to remove the rust. WD-40 is a great one to use in this case. Just make sure you do not over-polish to the point where you are removing actual material from the shaft...you just want to get rid of the rust, and then ensure that it won't come back.

How to ensure it doesn't return...don't add water and make sure you use after-run oil when you plan on leaving the RC sit for more than a few days.

no, you dont have to replace it. spray with wd-40 and use a light sandpaper and get the rust off, for extra protection you can let it soak in the wd-40 for a while. when you rebuild make sure not to get water in the engine so that wont happen again...

personally i would go and buy me a new part if it is in the motor because i wouldnt want anything to mess it up.

Is it rust or discoloration. I had some rust looking discoloration on my crank which is caused by the fuel and the combustion within the engine. I asked Rody Roem about it and he said that it is nomal. But if it IS rust, you should try to get rid of it to say the least.

Sometimes even when an engine is new there can be slight rust on the crank. This should not hurt performance in any way and will go away with runtime and ARO after usage. Just make sure the rust is not too bad.

I wouldnt sand any engine part espically the crank where fuel flows up it from the carb to be combusted.
