Hello, well today I was just getting my new picco close to being dialed in, after many issues of o ring related debris and air mixture mishaps and the worst thing for me to have happen occured. The crystal on the RX lost connection and off the truck went, straight line wot. Knocks off the air cleaner after it struck a chain link fence and ran upside down, uprotected until it stalled. I'm very bummed. I feel I that there is a need to tear the motor down and to be prepared to replace some engine parts. I'm seeking some input from others that would have experience in tearing down a Nitro engine and what to look for in the way of potential damage done. I'm a newbie to this and am seriously considering taking a long vacation from this hobby as the motor was very very fresh and I have mucho dinero tied up into this truck that keeps teaching me things the hard way (with my wallet). What do I look for when I open this motor up? And are the sleeve and piston available if they are damaged? Such a bummer as I was just getting the thing running towards reliability and completion of break in. Darn these setbacks....

Everything should be avaliable, but I just wanted to say, man what happened to your luck? Seems like everything bad happend to you. I wonder if your doing everything right? BTW: when you repair an engine, be sure to get parts that are made for that SPECIFIC engine, or youll be screwed.

Its my month to eat some lemons. Haven't made a good decision yet this June, and that is a generalization. Would a Failsafe have saved the day? remember, after much examination, I found the culprit to be the rx chip came out of its socket. Will the failsafe product protect me from this happening again? I'm glad no one got hurt and it didn't take off into a roadway and cause an accident. It can always be worse right?

You could have hit an old lady crossing the street. Her walker would have been totaled by the impact of your mighty nitro... she would have attempted to beat it off with an impaired mobility device ... (huh huh... I said "beat it off") but she would have been devoured by your mighty nitro power.

Hate to be the bearer of sad news... The failsafe would have saved you. No signal... you're safe. Lost X-tal, you're safe. Lost X-mitter, you're safe. Conflicting radio, you're safe.

That sucks man I would get a Failsafe for that ride.. so u wont havto worry about that.

Yes the failsafe would have taken care of you for certain.

however, what makes you think the engine is broken?

If anything, pull the carb, make sure there is no crud inside, rinse it well with denatured alcohol. If there is debris, mud, dirt etc, THEN, proceed to just remove the engine head and inspect further. If you have debris under the head, in the pison/sleeve area, then its just time to break it down and clean it. Nothing should be broken though.

Have you tried to run it since?

Wouldn't the throttle return spring have closed the carb off. That's if there is one.

It MIGHT have.... But if the throttle servo is locked in the ON position then the spring will NOT overpower the servo. My opinion is that the spring will backup the failsafe but thats about it.

This truck is pretty well equiped. Except for the failsafe, UUGGGHHH!!! I have the stock return spring but the stock steering servo is running the throttle, and a hs 5645 controls the steering now. I may be lucky and not have to do a rebuild. I have removed the head and found no signs of visible debris in the cyliner area. Will be tearing down the carb next for a complete cleaning. I have not tried to run it since "the crash". I was so frustrated the farthest I got was cleaning the truck off and finding out what the heck went wrong with the radio signal. I live in Phoenix and have a Nice new scratched Nova head, not even one full tank through the motor with this new head, sigh. Next upgrade will be a failsafe I suppose. I am not getting wheelies yet, I have extended tvp's and a mugen 3shoe inside a 16t cb? Should I expect wheelies? Also, one of my big Joes got junked on the chain link fence, where might I find one tire for sale? I hope I can get away from this lesson relatively well.

Ok, today I took the motor out and tore it down (sort of). I have never pulled a nitro all the way down, that continues to be true. I carb cleaned thoroughly all areas and orifices. Also took the back plate off and got the inside real good too. Same treatment to the carb. I noticed some dirt in the carb and some dirt towards the crank entry. I have no visible damage on the cylinder wall or top of piston or inside case. But, did not remove piston so not a complete exam. I'm thinking ill call this good enough and put it back together and try this hobby again. Still need to replace a tire and found out that my front driveshaft is gone. Looks funds like my failsafe will be going to a new front drive shaft.

Get the failsafe THEN get the driveshaft. No need for a repeat crash. And it just goes to show that the return spring doesn't always work :(

Glad to hear there wasn't much to see in the mill. Thats what you want.

Sorry to hear about that Nova head though :( Such a nice head too!

Sorry I can't help you on the BJ-40.....

Venom and OFNA make very good failsafes and a very reasonable price. I would stay away from the XTM.

MPI is also good and Futaba is great, just a little pricier.

I just picked up a Venom failsafe. The Futaba one was nice, but VERY expensive. My LHS was selling one for nearly 80 bucks!!!

A failsafe won't help if one of your receiver batteries falls out, make sure you put a strip of electrical tape around your battery pack. Or just pickup a chargeable humpback.
