I have a RS4 3evo, and i know these are good basher cars, but i've also read that they can be made into decent racers. I'm curious as to what it would take to make this car perform as well as say, a NTC3 (basically, what it would take to make a evo competitive in a race). i've already got a few things down, like, adj. turnbuckles, tuned pipe, air filter, foam tires, and high-torque steering servo. how would the t-15 mill fare? or would it be wise to go with an o.s. in order to be competitive? do you think a radio upgrade is neccesary? i've had my eye on the spektrum 2ch radio just cuz i hear nothing but good about spektrum products. I'm not planning on going racing just yet, but as soon as i get the hang of tuning and can control my car well in parking lots, i'd like to try some racing just so i've got something to make it a little more exciting than just turning laps in a lot by myself.

I've got an RS4 and race it. I have an O.S. 18 CVR in it and its FAST! I have a Futaba 2PL radio and its OK. I would go with the spektrum and then you dont have to worry about conflicting feq. that and cost you a lot of $ in repairs (trust me). Other then those changes softer springs might help in the cornoring depending on the track. Dont think theres much else you can do.

Your success will have more to do with setup and driving then it will be by throwing money at the car. If you are tuned and running properly and have your car chassis properly dialed in you will most likely be at or close to the front of the pack. Save your money and build up your spare parts box so you don’t get caught short when you break something and then have to go home early.

A good radio will help you in the long run no mater what RC you decide to use now or in the future. If you are seriously into the hobby and expect to stay in it for the long run a Quality radio is money well spent.

i just noticed the replies here. thanks guys. thats good to know. i had already planned on getting the o.s. .18 when this mill's days have past. and like i said i had been looking at the spektum dx2 radio system. i dont really need a 3CH radio do i? i love the freatures the spektrum advertises but i've never tried one out. but at $170 for the 2ch version with servos included it doesn't get much better. i suppose your right ed, for what it would cost to buy aluminum or graphite pieces, i could buy 2 spares of the plastic pieces and be much safer in the even of a crash. one more thing, at speed, when i turn my car to the right, it makes a pretty decent turn, slides a little but nothing foams shouldnt solve, but when i turn left the car just spins out from the weight of the motor being on one side. i stiffened the RF shock with a 4 mm spacer, and 2mm on the right rear. this helped a bunch but still a little dodgy on left handers if I'm not careful with the throttle. is there anything else i can change to help..or am i stuck with it?

I'm going to be blunt. Dont take it as being mean.

I don't feel that RS4 evo is much of a racer. By all means, get used to racing with it, then upgrade to a better car.
Evo is great to bash with in a lot, but if you want to be competetive, upgrade the car. You will spend less in the long run.

Look at Kyosho, Mugen, Serpent, etc.

No argument that its not the ultimate race rig or even close. On the other hand, time after time, I have seen novice drivers take the field with less than desirable cars. At the entry level club races its all about setup and driving.

If you find after time your car is holding you back, by all means its time to upgrade to a better racer. In the meantime tossing cash at your particular ride isn't going to do all that much. Check with your local track as to the proper tire selection. Foam isn't always the answer and many tracks wont let you run them.

You only need a two channel radio. No need to spend the cash on 3 if you will never use it. Research your radios first to see if another 50-100 will get you more. Honestly I'm not familiar with the lower end units and can't offer much help in the sub 200 units.

thanks again for the input guys. and yes i realize that as my driving skill progresses i will need to have a car that can keep up. i plan on being in the hobby for a good long while, so I'm sure i will end up with several different vehicles at one point or another. but as for right now it would just be me trying my luck at some beginner club races and such. so from what ya'll have said and other reading it seems like the evo will suit me just fine for awhile as it is, with the exception of probably a new radio setup eventually since i will be able to use this on many cars down the road. by the way, would anyone happen to know of any good nitro tracks in the Dallas/Ft Worth area? or maybe an up to date track locator? i've tried a few different seaches but some of the places listed were no longer in business.

Post in the track and buddy locater forum. There are a lot of members in TX.

You mentioned that you may have several RC in the future, One feature to look at in a radio is the number of "Setups" (RCs it will hold in memory). A lot of the Lower priced mid level radios will only hold 3. Its better then just one but I have found 3 not to be enough. As you start to race you may want to have several setups for the same car. One for a more aggressive feel, one for a mid feel and one for a conservative feel. After that if you have another RC you are racing you will be out of memory.

Just my .02 on the subject.

The RS4 is a good "race basher" I beat the crap out of mine on the track and rarely buy new parts. I own the RS4 3 SS kit and dont really know the differecnces between the kit and the RTR EVO. With the O.S. engine its plenty fast enough and a two channel radio is just fine
