Yes it's fine to have steel and plastic gears mixed in the tranny.

I have a steel idler gear in my emaxx tranny and the rest are still plastic. It has held up fine under the torque of a brushless motor.

the gears that RRP makes for the traxxas trucks are great i recomend getting the top shaft as well!!! its great for bashing havent busted a gear in 3 years!!! great stuff but i also went with te hardend steel gears!!! worth every peny!!! now i just need a hardend primary shaft! know where i can get one?!?

Is it safe to have both metal and plastic gears in the tranny. I seems like the metal one would just rip the plastic one apart

Ps: great post easy for any one to follow those directions

the foward only kit only touches the two metal gears...so the plastic shouldn't be ripped...the output gears are gone on a foward kit...if you have both the reverse and foward gears...then you most likely will melt the output gears..

I bought the forward only steel kit, the one that comes with every gear, but one. Does anyone know what gear that is and if I can buy it in steel/alum? I have 1 plastic gear in with all steel gears so I'm wondering how long that'll last...

I used the traxxas FOC and it comes with the screws to plug the holes in the case, it how ever is not nearly as nice looking as RRP FOC but it is working well so far, nice diagrams by the way....

How much of a difference will this conversion make?

sort of depends on what you expect out of it. First off, it helps acceleration because it eliminates a clutch inside of the transmission, basically it just makes the initial acceleration smoother. If you are looking for power handling, well that's no problem. Steel gears will take a lot of abuse so the difference is dramatic, if you're using a TRX 2.5 then the difference is basically 0 when it comes to durability because that engine doesn't really need steel gears.

Here is what i have going here guys. truck is a 5 or 6 tanks past break in so its rather new. not sure it its the cluctch or a clutch in the tranny.
if i hold the truck off the ground and start it the tranny kicks in hard and will stall the truck if it sits on the ground and then somtimes it will start up with out stalling the truck to. let me know what you think

I have the t max 4910 model, i think the tranny is going out already cause it shifted into reverse while going forward and now acts funny trying to go onto gear and stalling the engine at start up g but iam sill not sure if its the clutch or maybe a clutch in the tranny that is acting up. so my question is will the 4908 tranny fit with the FOC in it. i can find them on ebay for a good deal. thanks

if the truck takes off as soon as you start it. check your clutch first. with the truck off you should be able to spin the spur/clutch bell freely. if you cannot, the clutch may be locked up. i would pull the engine and take the cb off. you may have snapped a shoe spring, or something.

i would do this before cracking the trans.
