DuraTrax Super Start Back Plate on Revo (Problems, help?)

For some reason today I believe mine gave out. It was working fine then it acted like it started acting like it was slipping. The sound I was getting was the motor trying to fire like every other time it was supposed to. Then all of a sudden it just spun out and the engine wouldn't fire anymore. I pulled it off and i can turn the motor over and it seems to work fine. It's an OS21.

Does this sound like something that should be replaced under warranty? What should I check for to see what's broke? thanks

This is what i have.

You need to remove the back plate and take the one way bearing off the shaft. Clean the bearing and the shaft with denatured alcohol and replace.

Ok kind sir, i tried that. No beans. Still the same thing. Anything else I can try.

thanks for the speedy response also!

Maybe its just plain shot? Try and loosen ur glow plug a little and see if it turns over. Might put a little less strain and allow the bearing to grab. Dont forget to tighten it back up though.

Is there anyway it could damage the shaft coming out of the motor??? If there is, that's just my luck.

Just sounds like a bad owb to me, did it kinda make a clanking sound before it quit? Also never use batteries bigger than the traxxas ezstart ones as they are to powerful and will destroy your owb. Learned the hard way.

I was using my Dewalt. Lol! I'm waiting on a new battery for the duratrax starter deal

And yes It was making some God awful noises

That starter shaft is worn very badly (looks like someone took a file to it) and needs replaced... If you install a new OWB with that shaft it will wear the OWB very quickly.

It's a brand new motor.... literally 3 tanks thru it. I was breaking it in. It's an OS21. I know it seems worn. If it is, the OWB did it.

i'm not sure what's going on, it has signs of metal shavings inside behind where the one way bearing sits. I'm pretty sure that's not normal.... Should I look into ordering a new one?

That's not normal. Slippage is caused by oil from the fuel getting on the bearing. Once you remove it check the shaft and put the bearing back on it and roll it. If it rolls smoothly you might have a much bigger problem, and by the looks of the pics you certainly do.

I wouldn't say it rolls smoothly but there's a little slack, maybe like 1/32 of play. what should i do? this is a brand new motor.....

the shafts are cheap. is not the whole crank which is good. i needed to replace my OWB and just incase since i live in australia i got the shaft too. it was cheap enough so i just threw it in there anyway while i was rebuilding the motor. i still have the old one as a spare as i know it isnt stuffed.

i tested it by using the old bearing on the new shaft. spun a couple dozen times and started to slip again so i just put new bearing in and hasnt faulted since.

Thanks, I guess I'll hit up the guys over at OS tomorrow and see what they say.

Called OS. they are sending me a new starting shaft... Good customer service over there for sure.

Should i go on and order a new starting set up to prevent this in the future? OR should I just go with a new one way bearing? Are there are upgraded one way bearings out there?

Ok,, new starting shaft came in today. What do i need to do to prevent this from happening again?

get new OWB too. wont hurt to replace both, and whats wrong with pull start? means u dont have to carry crap around when it stops.

Don't use a drill, they have to much power and will destroy another shaft and OWB if the motor becomes flooded. Had that happen once on my savage, didn't realize the engine had become flooded and stripped the gears in the rotostart back plate.
