Only have 1 tank through my Savage X 4.6. Still in break in period. Filled tank again, and the roto start spun without turning engine over. Will try cleaning it, as HPI suggested, hopefully not the one way after a single tank!

I had the same problem in my RS4 3 EVO, turned out to be a little pin going from the rotostart unit itself, into the piston arm, was either too short or sheered off but that sounds like thats your problem, IMO id crap the roto and get a puller because I pulled the roto start off 2 times to fix it and could never get the pin to set right...

Love my rotostart, hate pull start.
doesn't sound like cleaning will do anything for you, something along the lines of the pin he mentions sounds to be the culprit.

That would be the pin and spring assembly it shows in the exploded view of the roto start assembly, I take it.

Any and all advice is welcomed.

Just bought my Savage X not long ago, already the roto start is shot. Only one tank through it on break in. Wondering what else to look out for, and what needs to be beefed up on it.

I'm surprised that the Roto Start broke so soon. The best way to make it easier on the Roto Start is to loosen the glow plug until the engine starts and then tighten it back up. That will lessen the compression which makes the roto start able to turn easier. Also, the only other weak link in the truck are the differentials. They are not shimmed correctly from the factory and will strip the gears. its a cheap, easy fix so go ahead and do it before it gets broken in. there are a few posts on here about it. other than that, normal bashing is no match for a savage

Not sure exactly what gave out, gonna try to clean it first as HPI recommended, haven't had time to look at it yet, work 3rds. Not to mention 6 days a week at the moment. Will look into the shims on the diffs. Thanks for the suggestions.

I must be the lucky one I have 2 savages and never shimmed the diffs on either. No issues with them at all and i beat the crap outta them. The only thing I've had trouble with is the plastic tie rod ends they stretch and the shocks I have snapped the ends off the shock shafts.

I ditched the want and put the bit into my drill. Works way better. As for the drive itself, it's been nothing short of 100% reliable.

Be sure you haven't connected the battery the wrong way. This will cause the starter to turn backwards which will just spin the one way bearing

Was definitely connected right. Started it for the first tank. On second tank it decided to act up. Just spins without turning motor over. Did talk to my local hobby shop. He agreed with HPI. Said it probably just got to much lubrication from the huge amount of fuel being dumped into the motor with factory break in tune. Told me the OWB is actually inside the crankcase on motor. Guess that makes a little more sense now. With my TMaxx it is external.
