I am thinking I have stripped a gear in the transmission. I had a rock get stuck in my rear drive train and tore up one of my drive shafts really bad. Ground it down to the point that it would not move up and down with my suspension anymore.

After replacing the drive shaft now when I spin both rear wheels backwards and forwards I hit a crunch point where the transmission just stops and can move forward again with a little bit of grinding sounds. Front and Rear differentials all seem to be in good shape after eating this rock.

Since I am going to have to pull the transmission out and inspect it I want to install a forward only conversion while I rebuild it. Accidentally already purchased the parts when I was performing a forward only conversion on my T Maxx Transmission.

Now I am looking for the bearings and will not know what other parts are required till I tear it apart.

This post is just informational on an experiance I have had. No need for advice unless you want to provide me with all the part numbers I require to rebuild the Transmission ;)

Tore the Transmission apart today and there was ground up plastic all over the inside from one of the reverse gears. Strangely enough I have never used reverse on this truck but when my suspension ate this rock it tore those gears up.

Most have caused a wobble in one of the bearings to cause this type of damage because all the forward gears still looked to be in good shape.

I am looking up the bearing part #s and will replace them all when I install the forward only conversion.

There's only one black reverse gear, the other black gear is the forward gear. Check your first gear on the input shaft while it's apart, they wear out fairly quick.
I've never changed traxxas tranny bearings and some of mine have well over 20 gallons of use on them.

Thanks for the input. The lower most black reverse gear was totality torn apart and missing a butt load of of teeth on it. This is the first Tranny rebuild on my Revo and must say I am impressed on the design of this truck. Since I never used reverse on this truck blew me away this gear was so damaged.

I could quickly remove the transmission and pull the tranny apart. Since I have never used reverse on this truck they only thing that could have caused this was the removal of the Opti Drive or a bearing wobble. I am leaning more towards the bearings going bad. Forward only conversion on these transmissions reduce the mass of turning in the transmission and make for less resitance. Bummed out I will not be able to run the truck until I get all the bearings replaced.

I'm sure it's the forward gear that's stripped, but ya never know, strange things do happen.
I would check the bearings, because like I said, they're probably all good.

If there is no damage to any of the other gears there is no reasonable reason for a reverse gear to strip if you have never used reverse, other than switching into reverse inadvertently while moving without the opti drive or both diffs being installed upside down and using reverse for forward unknowingly.
A bearing that’s worn enough to cause a gear failure would lead to more than the reverse gear failing.

Some of what you have said is making more sense then what I was originally thinking. I had to remove the opti drive system to install a new Spectrum DX3C radio system back in July. I did install a the 3 channel receiver and possibly the reverse servo was not setup properly in the digital settings on the new radio system.

The Diffs have never been removed on this truck and still original so reversing one of the diffs is not in the problem.

Strangely enough I ran it all summer on the new radio system then recently stripped the reverse gears. Ran about a gallon of fuel this summer on this engine. Since the reverse servo is a button control I could have hit it running one day recently and not had the radio setup to open the servo completly into reverse.

Converting to a forward only transmission and removing all those unneeded parts will elimiminate this problem in the future.

The weather is turning cold out here so it will be next spring before I run my Nitros again unless I have another really warm weekend. I dislike winter tuning on nitro engines and probably putting them to bed for the winter than just run my 4 electrics on nice days.
