So now that I have a couple of gallons of fuel thru my 5309, I feel like I have a alright handle on tuning (thanks to this site an others). Almost the entire 2 gal was on one glow plug, but I ended buring it up after a roll over which I could not correct due to me being in a wheel chair right now. After replacing the plug yesterday, I started to experience something new. The tune seems fine, nice light smoke trail, quick trottle response, and overall good performance, I noticed when bring it in to check temperatures, it all of a sudden will quit. It idles fine after a WOT passes, starts fine and idles, just seem to quit for no reason. I messed with tuning the LSN a little, and no change. Long story, I ended up going back to factory settings, but still have the issue. Any ideas?

when u ajust the lsp u need to adjust your idol they seem to work to geather a little bit

Pull the air filter off and check that the throttle opening is about 1 mm (the thickness of a credit card) with the trim turned all the way down. Then you can work with the LSN to get the best performance. Usually when you start the truck, you will need to bring the idle up with the throttle trim.

You maybe onto something I do not have a handle on. I increased the throttle opening 3 different times (1/16+) with no change except it wouldn't start. Back to factory settings now, same result. Wondering now of a have some trash in the carb, or I do not understand the trim deal. I've never messed with the trim, nor understand the multi-function trim adjustment. no idea about that w/o reading some more

Try taking the carb off and soaking it in some fuel overnight and then blowing it dry and reinstalling it.

Qucik update......... sprayed the carb out with Nitro Force, seemed to make a slight difference, but still wasn't cured. I ended up losing the handle on my tune, and had to start from scatch. I've almost got it dilaed back in. A little more tuning and I should back to the nice tune I had before. Appreciate everyones help!

New Information

Well, as stated previously, I thought I was getting the handle back on things, until yesterday. Buudy of mine came over, he has an older Tmaxx upgraded to 3.3. It literally would run away from me. My truck was rich, so we started tuning,........ long story short, we got it running better, but still was not nearly as fast as his (I understand he is lighter) We pulled the carb, and found nothing out of line, ran it with no difference. Ended up pulling the head and found aluminum spots stuck to the head, and noticable rounding of the piston edges, and four cracked cooling fins, and one broken. Clear evidence something had gone seriously wrong. I suspect crank shaft damage, but have not torn it down yet (we were able to pull the psiton sleeve out the top) The truck is 2 months old, and has had 2+ gallons run through it. I swear I've not seen and temps above 270, and always have had a good smoke trail. I'm at a loss. Should I contact Traxxas, give up on this mill, or what suggestion to you guys offer. Thinking seriously about getting away from the 3.3 and going to .26 max, but do not want to get rid of reverse.

I have the .26 max and i still have reverse the max will mount right up as long as u get the Ofna mount that sold separteand as long as u have factory gears there very little room for gear meshing. It has a lot more power than the 3.3

You can keep reverse with the upgrade, but that will make the tranny the weak link. I had my original 5309 about a week before reverse turned itself into a pile of plastic shavings.

fyi

Found out after ~2.5 gal., the 3.3 was alomost toast. Still running, but loosing power, starting hard when hot, and heavy wear on the piston. Elected to go with a replacement 3.3 to avoid breaking drive line components. After all, my driving is not as fast as the Revo. In process of breaking in the new mill (4th tank up next) This engine seems to have much more compression even when the original RTR was new. Damn hobby is expensive, but I'm still spending $$
