My inner, rear diff just went out. The gasket was worn and the silicon fluid turned to gunk and black in color. Not much left in there either. Also, bearing 5119 was toast, but the gears are fine.

My question is what is the normal life span for a diff with the stock 3.3 motor?

I got eight gallons out of this one.

Should I invest in aluminum, inner and outer diff cups at @ $25 each or stock diff cup @ $4 each.

How much more life would I get out of an aftermarket setup?

I stripped my front and rear diff (the output gears) on my 2nd gallon, so I'd say 8 is pretty good.

If the diff cases are in good shape, I'd just order the rebuild kit for the diffs. The Traxxas rebuild kit has a stiffener in it that doesn't come in the stock diffs. I thought someone told me that the aluminum diff cups are good for people who race, I'm just a basher right now so I didn't upgrade mine.

Thanks Mr. Clean,

I think I will stick to the stock diff cups.

Which rebuild kit are you referring to. The new upgraded gears (5382X) or the (5381) inner diff cup with new gaskets?

I ended up getting both because I wanted new gaskets and o-rings and figured what the heck, I'll replace the cup also. Looks like on ebay you can get 5382x for $14 and the 5381 for $6, both those are with shipping. I haven't had a problem with either diff since rebuilding them and I've been running my Revo pretty hard lately.

for a little bit more you can go with the RRP metal geared diffs. comes with everything you need except the cup and case.

i stuck with the stock cup since it wasn't broke but def get some extra o rings. i usually start leaking after about a gallon of hard use

Thanks for you responses.

It seems that leaking fluid is the main problem with these inner diff cups.

Not able to handle the pressure I guess? Is the weak link, the plastic cup, or the deteriorating gaskets, or the breakdown of the silicon fulid?

Has anyone tried using an automotive type, RTV sealant in addition to new gaskets?
