T-maxx, While I am not sure how experienced you are with Nitro, I believe that cosmetic upgrades and functional upgrades(Chassis,steering,transmission, suspension) would be fine....My worry with any mechanical upgrades...would be lacking the know how to make the carb adjustments to the factory settings....I believe the set-up from the box is set for the stock pipe and air filter for break in...Changing either of those 2 components will probably alter that and add yet another variable to your break in procedure....Anyway, I am in the process of waiting to break mine in...(cold temps, snow) and I will be waiting until after that to change pipe and air filter....If I missed the point of your question or if I am full of it, I apologize....After all, I am a newbie just trying to help:).

I agree with Thunder, I'd leave airfilter & pipes out of the game for breakin.
Unless you have years of experience.
Break in shouldn't take long and performance output is somewhat limited during that time anyways. I'd do performance upgrades after you know your specific engine well enough to react quickly in case settings need to be changed.

I personally think a novice should start off easy then move on to bigger things. Breaking in an engine can be complex itself. Once the engine is broken in and the drivetrain has been run inI would start upgrading then. Cosmetics, like bumpers or arms or a body. ANything that has to do with the engine, pipe or the drivetrain , I would wait till after the break in.
