ok, so i realize that my 2.5 is now a dinosaur. i got it off ebay, and couldn't keep it running right - finally figured out the motor was pretty much shot. Instead of getting a new one, i'm gonna rebuild this one - new bearings and piston/sleeve - just cause i like to tinker. i found instructions on how to "mod" the engine via porting and polishing the crank and cylinder sleve. has anyone ever had these mods done or done it themselves? how well does it work?

That kind of work is best left to a professional. Traxxas engines aren't really worth rebuilding. You'll need the rod too, and that puts the cost pretty close to a 3.3 swap. You'd be better off finding a good quality used mill and rebuilding it if you want to tinker.

That is true. Unless you have somewhere that you can find the piston, sleeve and rod for pretty cheap you are better off getting a 3.3 either with the traxxas trade in or off ebay. My buddy was going to rebuild his 3.3 and the parts would come out to $80+ after shipping and getting a brand new motor was $115. But as Matt said I would try to step up to the 3.3 by getting a shot one and rebuilding it if you want to tinker. They say its 60% more power than the 2.5.

Yes i wldnt port and polish myself..
Rebuild yes... but as above... its not really worth it being a Traxxas engine..

each to their own though but as if you wlndt want to upgrade to a 3.3..??
