Resurrecting this T-Maxx for a good cause...!

Hey guys I don't even know where to even start with this one but I need your help! I will give you some background information real quick. At my church me and the youth director will bring some kids out to my RC track and let them rip it up with some electric slashes I bought a few years ago or this purpose, and hopefully get a new generation into RC. Well today after church one of my buddies, Andrew, who has special needs was so excited to show me his new Nitro. Needless to say I was pumped up until he opened up the trunk of his mothers trunk. To my horror sat the most abused T-Maxx I have ever seen. "Please help me get it running"...it is still echoing in my head!

I don't even want to know what my facial expression looked like, so I tried to be positive. I tried to talk him into one of my slash's or even a Revo, heck I was willing to give him one easily. As I talked to his mother he old me Andrew had saved his money all summer to get a "Nitro like Mr. Rich"... A neighbor sold him the hurricane Rita T-Maxx for $125 bucks...I almost crapped myself! I don't have any T's or any parts but some chassis braces, a tranny but not much. If you have spare parts let me know what and how much. I have radio and receivers and looking in some bins now, please help me out by letting me know what you may have, he only wants this wreck cause he bought it. Dang this is complicated. Thanks

I don't own a t maxx so I can't help you out there. But that is extremely nice of you to do! You don't see that much anymore. What kind of maxx is it? (don't know much them) A shop I frequently go to has a Clearence table, I can look there for you. I've never looked for TMAXX parts on it but if its an older one they might have some. I've picked up a few spares off there for my old tc3 like arms, hubs and shock towers, all for a buck a peice! It's more then an hour away so I'm not to sure when I'll be back there.

It looks to be a 4910, out side of it being dirty it doesn't look bad. Does it run?.

I would clean it up make sure all the bearings are lubed and spin freely, what parts are you looking for?.

For 125$, I think its a good deal if it runs.

Hey guys thanks for the input, no it doesn't run at all. In fact this is after one cleaning with Nitro Clean. 3.3 is totally locked up as well as the tranny. I have a tranny, spur, slipper etc. servos are done, shocks are bent on 3 of the four corners, I have radio and receiver and a bolt kit. I will update more, got it soaking now. Thanks

As pointed out earlier that's a really nice thing to do and it doesn't happen often! I honestly wish I could help but alas I have no parts or knowledge on the T-max what so ever

Now that I looked a bit closer it can be a 4909 couldn't tell with all the dirt, anyway, if you like I have front and rear RPM arms for it, shock towers bulk heads rims 2 tires 1 good body and some miscellaneous parts, just pm me if your interested .

In my opinion, I'd tear down the truck to give it a very thorough cleaning. Then take apart both diffs and tranny - cleaning, replacing any needed gears, and lubing them up. I'd also just get a new bearing kit for the truck from Full Force RC, Acer Racing, or Boca.

As for the engine, I'd probably just take a look at using the Traxxas engine replacement plan, get a new 3.3 for about half retail price.

Pull the engine apart, and check it out. When I got my T-Maxx, it looked like it was left outside for a couple years. There was fuel left in the tank, and the engine was so gummed up, that it wouldn't turn over. If it's not broken, you can try cleaning it....it may fire up and run.


I pulled the engine apart and soaked it all in Simple Green and hot water, when the water was cool enough to work in (but still hot), I scrubbed it all really well with a toothbrush. After I was finished, I blew all of the water out (focus on the bearings) and then soaked the internals with some 3-in-1 oil (focus on the bearings), and reassembled it. I also took the carb completely apart and used the nipple cleaner part from a bottle cleaner, my son was just born, and cleaned the carb really well with some WD-40. After all of that, I sealed it up and gave it a shot.....I lucked out and am still running that engine in my Jato.

Update 10/15 troubled T-Maxx

Ok...fully torn down, wow first of all I would love to punched whoever abused this "T" to this extent. I have this thing broke down and have the RC scrap yard on speed dial. I'm hanging on by a "ethical" thread here, all day long I have thought about getting a roller and telling Andrew "Tada" look we are almost done. But he wants to be involved in this process..so I basically need just about everything or need to rebuild everything...pray for they"T".
