Replacing Laptop LCD Screen

My laptop is an HP Pavilion ZD8000 with 17" LCD. It's about 2.5 years old and out of warranty.

About a week ago I got the dreaded red line across my screen. I read about how it may be possible to get rid of it by pressing on the corners of the screen/moving the hinges, but it did nothing to help. I'm wondering if I should replace the screen myself or is it worth it to have a professional do it.

New screens go for about $190 from ebay. What am I getting into if I decide to do this myself? Any special tools needed? What precautions do I need to take?

I am going through the something similar with mine. Mine actually turns on but goes fuzzy. I believe my youngest got to it. Regarldess, the guy I having it repaired by is charging me 120 plus the actual part that I will buy. He warranties the install not the part since he is not buying it.

Sucks.

I have taken a few of the apart and they are a PAIN. If you do not have the service manual, I suggest against. There are screws that are not seen clearly and you can snap them off....

It can be done... just a royal pain. If you take your time you should be ok. Like Jon said... there alot of tiny screws that are not real visible as well as plastic tabs that can get broken off really easy. Getting the case off is half the battle. Business laptops tend to be easier to work on as opposed to the consumer lines for some reason. If I can be of service just let me know.

I've torn apart many many laptops, its not as hard at it looks, just remember when your taking it apart, if it doesn't come apart relatively easily then you missed a screw.

are you getting the whole screen, case and all, or just the lcd?

before you buy a lcd check the connections for the screen, I've had a few that were just loose and replugging them cleared up the problem.

i just looked that model up on google, and i dont think I've worked on that one in particular, but there all basicaly put together the same. looks like the cover right across the top of the keyboard pops off, and should expose the screws and wires for the screen. if your getting the whole top, piece of cake, if your just getting an lcd then you have to take the top apart. normally screws around the edge then a bunch of snap together areas. then the lcd is held into place with a few screws.

you will probably need a torx bit as most of the hp and compaq machines use the same size bit for all there screws.

I'm getting just the LCD screen. From the pictures of the ebay auctions I have been looking at it doesn't look like it comes with a case.
