How often should u rebuild the stock diiffs and what would u do to rebuild them

I'm getting ready to install rear diffs in my revo as soon as they come in. i had to replace the rear bulkhead. it took about 45 min. you may want to buy the diffs as one piece instead of seperate ring and pinion gears. less hasle getting things lined up. just remember where all the screws go. between the looks of my revo and maxx, you shouldnt have that much trouble with the diffs. easier to get to on the maxx. ask someone to maybe post some links for you about some diffs. they can steer you in the right direction. good luck

rebuild when they start to feel crunchy and not smooth....the T-maxx uses grease for lube instead of oil...it doesn't break down as fast so you'll probably just break em before you need to regrease em.....If you have any worn gears you need to replace them...make sure u shim all the gears really well (even NEW complete diffs need to be shimmed).....and make sure you don't put them in backwards....
here's the exploded view...you can get all these from the traxxas site

Try a maximizer setup... the aluminum diff cups dont flex like plastic. The flex can make the pinion gear skip on the ring gear causing a lot of wear, in return, a diff not lasting long at all.

yes upgrading your diffs is a good idea if you are using your maxx a lot....if you are racing or even just running at the track it's a must......and if you drop in a bigger mill you can't use stock diffs for very long unless you at least change the diff cup and prefferably the diff housing as well.....RC has those maxximizer diffs and I'm waiting to hear from him on how much maintainance there is on them.....I like low maintenance vs. performance...that usually lets you get by w/ more problems......

Maximizers are nice diffs but they are really pricey. If you run your truck enought to warrant such an expensive upgrade I would do it. If not then I would just get the stcok ones again.

Rebuilding them is just like plaidfish said. Grease goes a long way and will last a lot longer then oil. If you don;t know how old the grease is then I would think of setting some time to inspect them in the near future.

I still have not gotten a chance to fully break in the engine... i would do it this weekend, but we are supposed to get rained on again! The report on the diffs will be when i get everything running right... hopefully soon!

yeah I liked the design I saw but I'm iffy on how they hold their bias once it's set.....if it's like every week I gotta rip into a diff and check my spring tension then I'll pass....I have a set of fastlane bulkless that I want to run on my basher maxx....but the modified robinsons set is just as much as the Maxximizers.....I'll wait till they're tested by our own RC10here......you give so much when you become the ginea pig...

I'd like to resurrect this thread for a moment if you don't mind.

I'm building another Maxx out of spare parts and I thought I'd rebuild the stock diffs. They were in good shape and replaced for performance/bling reasons.

Has anyone ever used diff oil instead of grease when rebuilding a stock Traxxas diff?

I see there's no o-ring in the carrier/ring gear mating surface. I'd hate to lose diff lube into the housing.

(There's not any shims anywhere, either!)

You need to buy shims... On the maximizer setup i have, there are no gears in the cup, so i can't use grease or oils... i never got a chance to shim the spider gears... I wouldnt use oil in the stock diffs just because of that reason... its gonna leak out!

I know that Steve Slayden takes his stock T Maxx diffs and cuts a gasket out of gasket material found at a auto store and puts then in his diffs and puts about 25 per. of diff fluid in then.

I have some shims left over from the UE kit. (haven't checked for fit yet)

The pro setups (UE) call for all shim usage options outside of the diff carrier only.

The spider setup in the carrier (UE again) calls for two shims only per tiny axle:

"3.4.12. Install the small bevel gears on the shaft facing each other with a shim on each end."

21? What's the maximizer setup?

Thanks for the help, guys.

I've got the 15x10 and 12x6 bearings from an Acer bearing kit. I'm gonna go with those and some fresh grease.
