RC Driving Style
i just got done with a quick bash right out side my house. ( hitting some snow banks) and my 4-wheel drive isn't working good. if i put the front wheels on the ground they pull but the back wheels don't move. but when it is driving i thought i saw the rear wheels throwing roost. i figured that i need to replace the rear diff, but i just thought it was weird seeing them turning when there wasn't much of a load on them. so do you guys think the rear diff is completly out?

Put both of the back tires on the ground and front tires off. Roll it forward and back. The front tires should turn the same as th rear. Second put both front tires on the ground so they do not move, then spin one of the rear tires, the other should rotate in the oposite direction. Try both sides. If it all checks out it is not your diff.

do you think they would send me another set? they already replace mine for me because they went out before break in was over. these ones lasted for about a third of a gallon.

In that case it´s more unlikely, but you can always try!

i finally got to taking apart the diff today because i went to the lhs and got some gears. after i took it apart and was cleaning it i relized that it was the ring gear that was messed up. it has like four teeth that are mangled. three of them are almost to nothing. the other gears look fine. i guess that the only way this could happen is if something had got in there. i don't know, but it'll be running tomorrow. thanks for the help guys.

I recenlty had a similar problem (broken ring gear twice in the front), the second time it happened the owner of the LHS said he would replace it personally, he also ended up putting a shim on the pinion gear to eliminate the slop between the pinion gear and the input yoke, this also brought the gears into a tighter mesh. Since then I have run a half a gallon of 33% through it without a problem. So if your problem persists you might try it.

okay, thats a good i idea and i'll try it if it breaks fast again. its only gone once so far so i guess only time will tell. thanks for the info.

The proper shim to insure a good mesh with no slop is critical to the life of the ring and pinion. I had to rebuild a diff 3 times before I figured that out.
