Recently the cone nut thing on the crankshaft in the clutch kept slipping off or the nut kept loosening, not sure if that contributes to the problem though.

A long time ago the rear center drive shaft broke, and just recently it broke again. I don't take it off any huge jumps. When it is broken, one wheel spins freely without affecting the other.

Is this normal or is there something wrong with the transmission or rear differential?

Which model do you have the 4909 or the 4908. There are a lot of people, myself included, having trouble with the rear center driveshaft on the 4908. The rear u joint gets extremely hot during running and stretches the plastic aound it; eventualy causing it to fail. I would suggest getting a front dogbone and drive cup setup for the REVO 3.3. The front dog bone is the same length as the rear drive shaft on the T-MAXX 4908. I found one at rc planet and the price wasn't to expensive

I have the older model, and the plastic didn't stretch, it simply broke the shaft, not the joint.

Well if it's the older one than traxxas makes steel center driveshafts with cvds for it I would give them a try.

I'm hoping for a less expensive solution, so I'm considering transmission or differential problems.

There was an old trick where you put a wooded dowel inside the axle to keep it from collapsing and twisting off. Just cut it to fill the whole length of the shaft. it really strengthens the shaft and dont add no weight. It worked great on my old maxx.
