To make a long story short, I blew up the rear bearings in my used rc10gt today. I just have some questions before I place an order at my lhs. I believe I have the 3/16 axles, but I could be wrong.

1. Are the rpm oversize bearing carriers good? Is it correct that they eliminate all of the little shims?

2. Is it more worth it to stay with the stock carriers and get new bearings? The stock ones on there are kinda worn out. I guess there is supposed to be a shim between the two bearings in each carrier, but there wasn't one in either of the carriers. So if I go with the stockers, I would be looking at $3-5 for those shims, and probably $20 for 4 good bearings.

Thanks for the help

also, how can I tell if my axles are 3/16 or 1/4 inch wide? I dont have calipers, and it is too close of a differance to tell with a ruler.

The 1/4inch axles will have a taper on them, and are typically found on the first few runs of the GT.

If the axle does not have a taper on them, it's the 3/16 axles. The 3/16 axles were found on GT's roughly 8 years old and newer.

(The RC10GT platform has been in production for 11 years in one form or another)

Ok, I did a little research, and I am fairly certain that my axles are 3/16". Now, is there anyone else that has an opinion on the rpm hubs? Do you need that wide shim that goes between the bearings, inside the hub, with the rpm hubs? (I dont have them and my lhs is a couple of hours away. The fact that this shim was missing was what made the bearings blow up; the axle was constantly being toruqed on the center ring, on the inside bearings, because the shim wasn't there to support it.)

Sorry, dont know how to post pics.

Anyhow, which are the bearings for the 3/16" axles, or which are the bearings period? The caption says "bearings and carriers for 1/4" axles" but it shows two differant types of bearings?!? Maybe one of those types is the one that you buy separately if you have the 3/16" axles?

Just go to your lhs and buy the rpm ones. I dont have these shims that you are talking about and nothing has ever happened to my gt(and I'm running an OS .18 cv-r). Buy rpm. rpm=good. rpm will replace anything you break.. but you wont break anything rpm.

If memory serves correctly, look for bearings that are 3/8x3/16. You'll need four. Stay away from Duratrax and Dynamites. They're just plain junk.

You can get them for a good price from Team Fasteddy. However, if you want to go stock on the bearings, or need an exploded diagram, look on www.rcdocuments.com for the GT manual.

Now, as for the RPM carriers... You could replace the stock ones with the RPM ones; RPM's stuff is top notch. I'm running the stock ones, and have not had a single bearing blow out.

Yeah, basically I have to decide wether or not I want to pic up some extra shims, new bearings, and probably new carriers (the ones on there now are worn from the bearing exploding I think)..........or I could get the rpm carriers WITHOUT bearings, and get their bearings meant for the 3/16" axles. I am not worried about durability so much (stock ones are fine as far as that goes) but I think that the rpm carriers are supposed reduce some of the need for shimming. On the other hand, if the bearings for the rpm carriers are crap, there are no other replacements as they are a specific (and 'wierd') size (the combo of width, height, and inner diameter).

The shim that I keep talking about...the one that goes BETWEEN the bearings...is here: http://www.losipartshouse.com/servlet/the-24611/ASC7377-R-Axle-Bearing/Detail

I am guessing that the bearings (mind you that it was the inside one on each side that blew out while driving, although the other ones blew out in my hand:)), blew out because this spacer was not there inbetween them to support the inner bearing ring against the axle pushing on it (side to side force). I dont know if the rpm carriers need these though, and if I get the rpm ones without getting these, and they DO need them, I will have to wait another couple of weeks:spit:

No idea. But, the stock bearings should work with the RPM carriers. Just to make double sure, you can email RPM and verify it.

No, I believe that the rpm carriers use "oversize" bearings with the same inner diameter. I just ordered the carriers and bearings along with a bunch of shims and other stuff, so I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Thanks yall for the help. Until then...peace:)

I think the oversize bearings are for running the 1/4 axles. I might be wrong though. Even then, with todays' killer motors (like the TZ.12, for example), bearing blowouts are more common.

RPM sells the carriers seperate (without bearings), and they sell just the bearings for the 1/4" and the 3/16" axles, so I just bought the carriers and 3/16" bearings seperate.
The engine was a brand new OS .12CR (the old, small bore one that they dont make anymore) but it runs very strong and I get probably 30+ mph with a ton of snap.
By the way, my GT was a "used" truck; it had used parts on it, but it had never actually been driven. The guy runs a lot of differant GTs for offroad, dirt oval, etc and made this truck out of his overload of spare parts. Great deal though; $250 for fully decked out with RPM (minus carriers obviously) stuff, lunsford titanium stuff, new engine, brand new 1600 mah 5 cell pack, battery level indicator, etc, etc. Only complaint was that he kinda mixed matched the bearings in the axles and transmission with stock, something I dont know, and crappy old duratrax bearings:constipat; that is why my bearings went bad in the carriers, and now I have to replace the bearings in the tranny:bow:

Sorry for the long post:badair::green-grin:
