Hey guys, not a big problem, but the idle is fine for about 2-3 minutes. then the car starts stuttering and trying to move very slightly, and it also occurs after heavy acceleration, I'm going to upload a video, and i will be looking for some helpful replies. the video is going to have to be in a ZIP or RAR file, because youtube doesn't want to upload. please dont think its a virus, i would like to fix this.
Matt.

I had to use MetaCafe [ame]http://www.metacafe.com/watch/4190168/rc_car_engine_problem/[/ame]

If this link doesn't work, its because its proccesseing, try in half hour. its now 20:05 18th february. had to use MetaCafe [ame]http://www.metacafe.com/watch/4190168/rc_car_engine_problem/[/ame][/QUOTE]

that Sounds seriously lean on the LSN fella, richen it out for lords sake !! Richen the HSN out too.

If you have the factory needle settings for the carb, RESET IT before you smoke you mill by getting it too hot.

Is that an axial engine btw ??

the "Flutter" you are hearing (that "repetative noise" you refer to) is your engines way of telling you it is way too lean.

To richen a needle setting turn it anti clockwise, to lean it turn it clockwise

Think of the needle as a garden hose. To get more water flow, you turn the tap in anti-clockwise thus increasing the flow. To slow down or restrict the flow, you turn the tap clockwise, thus allowing less water through the hose.

General consensus across a wide range of engines, is that the LSN should be flush with the housing. You could also try the HSN at 4 full turns out from closed. Think of a full turn as 12 hours on a clock face, i.e from 12 to 12.

HOWEVER..............GET the FACTORY needle settings for your engine and work from them. if that fails try the above flush LSN , 4 turns out from closecd HSN routine

hey, no problems mattwadz. We all have to start from somewhere and one day not too distant from now, you too will be helping out newcomers with advice as well.

To quote a fellow member (or two) "The only dumb questions are the questions that are not asked"

The LSN needle controls the low speed and mid speed settings on a 2 needle carburettor. The HSN needle controls the mid to high speed settings. It also controls the flow to the low speed needle as it is where the fuel enters the carb.

I have never referred to either the LSN or HSN as the "mixture" needle as both control the fuel flow in different rpm ranges of the engine.

Yeah, ok now I'm being a big noob, but what does the HSN do, and is the LSN the brass which has a grey screw inside of it, because i just turned the one which has a rubber tube thingy on the other side of it and that sound has gone quite a bit. I'm still not sure, i just need a real clear idea on what they both do, also the car takes a while to start, and when i turn the idle needle, i turn little bit by bit, but it doesn't do much at all. any ideas on where i can get a clear example. i also just set the Brass Needle 4 turns from closed. so thats getting somewhere.

hang on a sec......................

This will answer the HSN & LSN question

This will also help

ONCE YOU HAVE THE CARB GAP SET, DO NOT ALTER IT.

This is from my T/Tiger manual so ignore the specific needle settings. It is merely a graphic illustration of the way to set the needles leaner or richer .......................

lefty loosy righty tighty the screw losent making more room for fuel to rush through thus making it ritcher

electric is for kids nitro is for big kids

I know lefty loosy righty tighty, i just couldn't make out the meaning to the rest of hpi's post.

i know what you mean by mixture now, i thought (maybe cos i'm about to fall asleep) that you were referring to the lsn & hsn controlling the "mixture" as a whole.

To recap:

The LSN needle controls the low speed and mid speed settings on a 2 needle carburettor.

The HSN needle controls the mid to high speed settings. It also controls the flow to the low speed needle as it is where the fuel enters the carb.

Basically, the lsn AND the hsn meter the flow of fuel into the engine. THATS IT

"Mixture" refers to the balance between air and fuel and that is tuned to the atmospheric conditions of (in short) the day you run, hence you will occasionally find that you may need to "tweak" the needles, but never by much.

Then, you get into the realms of the glow plug type (Hot, medium or cold) which changes the timing and how your choice of nitro % fuel you use determnines the type of plug you use.

The idle needle (better known as the idle screw) controls the gap between the carb slide and the venturi (barrel) of the carb. Once that gap is set (most commonly a 1mm gap), you should never have the need to reset it. It stops the carb slide closing too much and shutting the gap too much thus choking the engine by starvation of oxygen to the point it wants to shut down, it also avoids the carb slide completely closing the gap thus shutting the engine down. It's purpose, as the name suggests, is to control idle speed.

Too low an idle speed and the engine will die off, too high an idle speed and the engine will want to engage the clutch and drive the rig forwards. This is also the cause of many a worn set of clutch shoes.

The main thing to concern yourself with once tyou have that gap set, is tuning the lsn and hsn to get a balanced tune.

If you are unsure about the "idle screw" have anothwer look at the section of my t/tiger manual in one of my prior posts.

pheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew, thats almost an essay i've written on the subject...........hehee

If you adjust the idle screw you have to adjust the linkage as well. You may be able to use the throttle trim, but adjusting the linkage is the proper way.

yh i was just refuring to the mixture setting on the whole its just a good way to renember what way to turn it when making it ritcher/leaner
if you think about it by turning the screw out or left you are letting more fuel into the carb and the engine its how i renember :)
