Is a 2.4 GHz radio that much better then a 27 MHz am radio ?

2.4 GHz is subject to less interference from things like your neighbors' microwaves, etc. May be coincidental, but I stopped having erratic input behavior when I went to the 2.4. No more WOT bursts or weird hard left turns.

In a word, yes. They tend to have a longer range and much less prone to "glitching" than the older AM style radios. Most of the 2.4 GHz radios also have a built in fail safe as well. They also allow more people to run at the same time because of the way that receivers are linked to a single transmitter.

Bubba,

IMO everyone should be using 2.4GHz radios. They have came so far down in price there really isn't much of a reason not to get one. As Hamz pointed out above the pro's far exceed the cost and is worth the purchase.

Even an inexpensive Tactic or Venom 2.4ghz radio will be better than an AM radio.

I'm all for 2.4. am/fm suck in comparison. I wont run anything else. And now days, you can get into 2.4 for cheap. Like Woodie said, Venom has a setup for really cheap to get you into a 2.4 radio. Or maybe you can pickup a used traxxas 2.4 from a slash, they are a pretty nice radio imo.

You would be surprised. Some FM Radios are FASTER than 2.4Ghz, but the crystal swapping is enough to make me not want to run one at the race track. I still use one for bashing though. AM however is pretty outdated and I don't think I would buy an AM radio at this point ;-) If it were free thouh...I'd probably use it!

A few pros still run FM and love it...
