Hey everyone,

I'm probably going to buy a Savage 21 from an old friend. He's selling it for $250, and it's got a Wasp .28 on it.

Couple Questions:

-Will all newer savage upgrades such as those for the X and 4.6ss and 25 fit on the old Savage 21?
-What parts do you reccomend I put on right away, assuming it is stock?

Yes, you can buy a Savage X kit if you want, to convert it to an X.

Assuming its stock, the first thing I would do is buy the cam-type steering ervo-saver and a Hitec HS-645MG or similar high torque servo. I would also do the 4-spider mod to the diffs. After that the sky is the limit, but those really should be done.

Yes the savage .21 is discountinued. They quit making it for the Savy .25,more power,Little bit of updating.

I hear that the Wasp .28 is hard to tune. What makes it so hard to tune? Do you think around two hundred dollars is a fair price?

What does the spider diff mod do?

The spider diff mod changes the diff from a 2-gear to a 4-gear setup, for increased strength. I just did the mod on the one .21 savage I picked up used, and granted, it was a bear to do, but in the end, it's worth it for the durability. Just plan to set aside about 4 hours and take your time. There's a lot of screws, pins, and parts to take off and bolt back on. This site has an excellent how-to under the tips section that details all you need to do. However, The parts list is a little 'dated'.

Heatbreak nailed the diff mod.

As for the Wasp, some engines are harder to tune than others. The Wasp will make great power when tuned right, but it may take a bit of time to hit that sweet spot with it. $200 sounds pretty good, is it RTR?

I'm not trying to sell you out of the Wasp .28, but I personally, took it out of my Savage and it sits on the shelf in time out. As AC said, that thing is a monster when you get it dialed in, but it can be frustrating as hell to get dialed in! If this is your first rig, you may want to think about it. Getting frustrated with a finicky engine may turn you off the hobby, and I'd hate to see that!

I agree with you on that it could turn him off to the hobby Monkey, but it also may teach him alot in the process... if ya stick w/ the tuning and actually get it to the sweet spot, you have learned a lot when it comes to tuning...

Very true, and if you do figure it out, you'll have to share your secret, man! Mr.Will and myself would probably pitch in to pay you to tune our Wasp's!

Good luck either way! You'll love that Savage, that much I know! Tough truck!

No, this will definetly not be my first RC. I was really big into it a couple years back and then I quit. I've had xxx-nt, rc10gt's, stampede's, crappy duratraxs, tmaxx, and a Savage 25. I got the savage right before I quit so I didn't do much to it.

i hear of alot of people doing a ofna throttle mod to there savages, iv'e never done the mod to mine, but if i wasn't trading it i would.

Ah, well in that case, go for it, man!

In case you're not aware of these. Receiver pack and Failsafe. Those are a must for any hobby grade r/c.

Welcome back to the fold (here are some tips)

$250.00 for a Savage 21 isn't bad, especially with the Wasp thrown in. I don't know what condition the truck is in, but here are a few tips.

While you're doing the diff mod, pick up the new Savage X bulkheads and shock towers. The new bulkheads allow you to access the diffs much more easily than the old pieces, and the new shock towers are needed to install these. Plus, the towers have three mounting points. You will need two of some of these part numbers to do both ends of the truck, so download the Savage X manual from HPI and the rest will be self explanatory. Part numbers are 85235, 85234, 86048, 86803, and Z649.

Also pick up the new X radio box. It makes life much easier. Part 85236/85237.

Do the throttle linkage mod. For it, you will need an inch long servo arm, the Ofna parts pack (OFN10705), four set screw collars, and one long linkage rod with threads at one end (this will replace the original throttle link).

Bend the rod in the shape of the old rod, with the threaded end pointed to the rear of the truck. Install the servo arm, and mount the throttle swivel midway down the top of the arm. Then, mount the brake swivel all the way out on the end of the bottom of the arm. Secure the throttle link to the swivel with a collar behind the swivel and the new return spring and the collar in front. Repeat this for the brake link, but use a half inch of fuel tube instead of a spring. After this, adjust everything to your liking.

Sorry for the length of this. Let me know you have any questions.

true what some replied allready........upgrade to 4gear diffs, cam servosaver & high torque servo......after that i would get a rollcage if you plan on rough driving & maybe an fm radio/receiver......myself i have the wasp 28 also.....i like the power it has but it was a little toutchy on tuning.....it will wheelie on demand once you get tuned to its sweetspot......i find that the os p7 medium turbo plug works best for my wasp........I'm runing about 245 to 250f on temp driving with the body on.......if its a savage, the parts will interchange with other savage parts........
