i am on tank 6 of the breaki-in on my rebuilt 3.3, my question is should i have to lean it out quite often to keep the temps between200-225? i lean it out a hair and the temps only go up a few degrees and when i check again after a few mins. its back down under 200. is this normal? the last engine i broke-in was about three yrs ago and i didnt know anything about temps at the time so this is actually the first time doin it correctly. lol
by the way, i am only leaning a litle at a time just to keep it in the range, less than an 1/8 turn each time.

As long as your running good (idling, bottom and top end)with nice smoke low temps are a good thing!:D

as long as your temp is at LEAST 215 and it keeps running your ok. after you get done with the break-in step. when you get to tank 6 then worry about tuning.

Yea just as long as you are in the 200 to 220 range you are fine. But I'm not to sure about a wet rag around the head tho. Hot metal and even a damp cloth is not a good idea. Not trying to argue with anyone.

This is a cold weather trick, However if the temps just will not come up and you feel you have leaned it out to much. Take a sock cut the top part off of it (you know the part that goes up your leg) And make your engine wear it :) How that works Blckrevo is that the engine is air cooled and the sock takes the air away. It is as simple as that.
If you do , do this please PLEASE please keep an eye on the temps :D

Good morning everyone, here is an update: i went out last night and ran a couple tanks through, still could not get temps to reach 200. i stopped leaning it because it wasn't making a difference. should i set it back to stock and try again? i am stumped. i read all your posts and am gonna try the sock thing today if it isnt any better. has this ever happened to anybody else? by the way when i run it there is a nice stream of smoke and the idle fluxuates a little but doesn't die. thanks for the help guys.hopefully today i can get it running right.

What are the temps are you running. And was the outside temp cooling down as you were trying to get the engines temp up?

the temps were at 187 after leaning out almost a half turn from factory, it was 76 degrees and real humid if that helps.

just an update.... ran a few tanks through this afternoon, on the 11th tank since starting break-in the temps finally sterted acting normal 206-240. the last 3 tanks were consistantly 225-240. after the first tank of the day i discovered the tank lid seal was shot and there was a leak right on the seam in the rear corner, bought new tank and it ran real good, but now i think i have a problem with the receiver or transmitter. when i slowly work the throttle up to wot at about three quarter throttle i have no response from the controler for about 1-3 secs. it doesn't rev up or anything its like i shut off the controler then when i move the throttle back and forth it takes off again. it still has steering when it does itbut no brakes or throttle i dont think its the servo as i tried three different servos and it did the same thing with all servos.any ideas ? i am looking into different radio equipment but that wont happen for a while as they are expensive for good sets.and just a note all batteries are fully charged and bats. in controller were put in brand new this morning.

Reciever battery??

i dont think it is battery related, its almost like a dead spot on the controler. when i am at 3\4 throttle it has no function other than steering and if i squeeze the throttle a little more it comes out of it and the revs pick up and the truck runs fine,if i go from full throttle back down slowly when i get to the same spot it does it again and as soon as i come off the throttle it works again. i am stumped again lol. i am going to the track in about 1/2 hour so maybe somebody there will witness it and have an idea. i am seriosly considering new tx and rx, any suggestions on what to get would be great. i know absolutely nothing about the rx and tx because never had any probs before. is traxxas known for weak electronics?

Check for binding as revo_rob suggested but you may also want to open the servo up and check for a broken/worn teeth on the gears. It's possible you've got teeth missing and it doesn't move when it hits the break but does once you push the gears past that point and it catches again.

ok i have tried 3 different servos and it does the same thing,a couple people who were practicing at the track seemed to think its the tx and rx, so i tried a different set of crystals and low and behold it ran fine for the day so tomorrow i am going to get new crystals. has anybody ever heard of the crystals going bad?

Yes if dropped (then cracked). Or if maybe you have a loose connection. It sounds like a fluke . Just replace your crystals and have fun.

Part of breaking it in also depends on the LSN setting. If you start to lean that out, you'll see your temp rise, and your engine become more responsive at low end.

thanks for all the help guys, i ended up getting a better st/th servo and a new controler and crystals and that seems to have fixed the problem. the break-in must have been good because this thing runs better now than it did when i bought it lol. but thats probably due to learning so much about the truck from you guys here on this forum!!!! so thanks again everybody.:)
