I'm thinking of getting the 3 speed with a 10% lower 1st gear and a 10% taller 3rd gear for my Savage X. My question is will I have to change the cb and spur gear to compinsate? It's the same tranny that comes in the XL which I noticed has a 52 tooth spur. I'm currently running a 17 cb and a 49 spur. And if I do have to change it what would be the best all round combination?

I can't advise you on what ratio to use, but you also have the option of adding an even taller 3rd gear that will take it to 55 MPH.

You'll need HPI part number 77065 which is a taller 3rd gear than what comes with the stock 3-speed.
Without this upgrade you're better off sticking with the stock 2-speed because the net top end differential without it is insignificant.
(Less than 3/10ths of 1% - forget the hype about the 3rd gear being so much taller than the stock 2-speed - they lowered the ratio on the output side of the shaft).

So then I would be better off getting the tranny in the unassembled kit form along with part number 77065 and building it as opposed to buying an assembled tranny and having to tear it apart to intsall the taller 3rd gear.

Six one way - half dozen the other....
You still gotta tear apart a tranny to install it - although you might save some money just buying the gears alone.

Since you can't externally adjust the 2nd gear shiftpoint make sure you have one of the newer transmission bodies where you can pop the top. Otherwise you have to pull the whole tranny out to adjust the one shift-point.

That's my problem, I have an S-25 I put a 3-speed kit into (not the complete trans) along with reverse. Reverse works great and saves me from running down the street to fix my bad driving (lol), but I could never get the 3-speed to shift right. Of course this was two years ago and I haven't driven it since due to other things in the way of my "fun time". I've finally gotten back into the hobby and have my RS4 and MT2 running, and the Savy will come down off the shelf soon, but I'm dreading dealing with the 3-speed again. Can you get the case you are mentioning as a service part or is it only the newer "complete" 3-speed that comes with said case? If I have to pull the trans to swap cases I might do the better 3rd gear too!

Thanks...
Mark

Awesome! Now that's the stock Savy-X part, but I assume it will fit the original TVPs as well?

Looks like I have some ordering to do!

Thanks...
Mark

Yeah mine has the removeable top six screws and the whole top of the tranny comes off spur gear and all! Is there a link to the part numbers I'll need to do a conversion?

It'll fit the original TVP's with no problem.

Sounds like you have the newer tranny body - so you can get by with:
HPI Part Number 87220 (3 speed gears etc + new idle shaft)
- and -
HPI Part Number 77065 (high speed 3rd gear)

Cool thanks! Yeah I already have my eye on a couple of kits on ebay as well as the taller 3rd gear kit. It's gonna be a lot cheaper on me to just order the gears as opposed to ordering an assembled one. Can't wait till Wednesday when i get paid!

Ok I got the three speed kit and taller 3rd gear ordered and on the way got everything off ebay for less than 65 bucks!

Hey everyone well i got the 3 speed and the taller third gear and after a little trial and error I got the shift points adjusted pretty close to where I want them. This thing is awesome! I still have to do some fine tuning to the shift points but It'll have to wait because I fried 2 spur gears. I know I set the mesh right but upon later inspection I found the engine plate is warped a little. I bought the truck used so I guess the previous owner had been kinda hard on it. I tried to use some small washers to "re-level" the engine but I can't get the mesh set properly. Will the 3mm engine plate from the XL fit on the X? and is it stronger than the original?

Third can be adjusted via the access port on the side of the trans, OR, if it is the newer X style case being discussed here you can remove the gear cluster to adjust.

I found this video quite helpful the other night when I was researching it all.

I have the X case (it was in stock at my lhs) and the new 3rd gear came in today. I plan to go back to my lhs tomorrow to get the gear and a few small parts and rip into my truck to update it like Cwal did (though mine had the 3-speed and reverse installed years ago)...

HTH...
