Has anyone used the "Chrome paint " ? If so what steps did you take to get the best results and finish?

This is Candyman's chrome job from his gallery. Write him a pm and he can help ya.

Well, not exactly off topic, but I just got a new body for my Savage today, I was supposed to get the new Silverado extended cab, but my LHS sold it by mistake, but no big deal I got the '73 El Camino instead, keep in mind this is my very first painting job and I want to to the best job possible wiht the materials I have to work with, and at this time I only have rattle cans for painting, I won't have my air brush and compressor till after the new year.......anyway, I have chosen to remove the blower from the hood and go with the good old Cowl Induction shaker instaed, kinda like the classic look anyway, I am keeping the side pipes, and the color I am going with is candy purple, I noticed on the can it says that some pearl, mettalic and candy colors are semi-transparent and an overcoat of silver or gold is needed for more brilliance, can anyone maybe shed a little light on this one? will one color (silver or gold) produce a darker deeper look than the other? Also, I have an exacto knife set, but forgot to get the curved lexan scissors, are they absolutely needed for trimming or can I get away with a good pair of regular scissors?

OK, I got the candy purple paint done, 3 coats, and I see what they mean by transparent, which still leaves me asking the same question about the silver or gold overspray, what would be the results of each one??

Road Rage,
Do you have any plans for that blower? If not, I'll take it and glue it on my stock Savage. Let me know or PM me. Thanks, Buzz

gold or silver

the gold or silver is used after the purple color so that you can get that sparkle

Sparkle? I thought that's why you would add metal flake to the paint if you were using an airbrush.........that's why I was asking since on the can it says to overcoat with silver or gold for extra "brilliance", I assume that was meaning more color depth.....which would be more of the result I am looking for, not sparkley metal flake, but thanks for the reply.

As a general rule, candy colors are transparent and do need backing. You want to use a metallic paint to back it to get the coolest sparkle. Gold or silver will work well. The silver will brighten the purple, the gold will give it a deeper shine. It won't make it look like a metal flake. That's a really intense sparkle. This will give it just a neat shine.
As far as trimming your body, if you use regular scissors, you'll be best served to use smaller ones so it's easier to cut curves. One thing that a lot of us use is a Dremel or other rotary tool. Use a cutting wheel to cut the basic shape and then use a sanding drum to finish sand the contours. It works really well. Then sometimes I'll hand sand with extra fine sandpaper to smooth the edges.

Cool, thank you very much for the advise Candyman, I appreciate it, so far it is looking pretty good, I used the entire can of candy purple giving it 4 coats, after it sat for about 10 minutes I used the hair dryer on low setting for about 3 minutes in a sweeping motion to kind of heat cure it, hope that didn't mess anything up, I still need to apply the backing, but how many coats should be applied? I also still need to get some chrome paint for the bumpers and side pipes. I should have an airbrush and compressor after the new year for any other bodies I should happen to get. Thanks again for the advise!

Just back it with enough paint so that it's hard to see through. You don't want to load the paint on because it makes the body heavier and increases the chances of chipping... And Alclad now makes their chrome paint in a spray can!!!!!

thanks for the info. on chrome painting,do i still back it with a water based black if its in a spray can???

No problem.
My tips on painting with chrome:

1.) Make sure the inside of the body is totally clean. No dust. No fingerprints. No water spots.

2.) Do NOT scratch the surface. With other colors, lightly scuffing the surface can help the paint stick. Do NOT do this with the chrome or ALL the scratches will show.

3.) Spray light coats. Usually 2-3 will do. The chrome is very transparent. So don't go loading it on thinking you'll get to a point where you can't see through it. If you get to that point, the paint will look horrible and you'll be broke! (this stuff ain't cheap)

4.) Alclad recommeds backing it with water based black. I used Parma Faskolor FasBlack. Worked like a charm. Usually 2 coats will do. Just make sure you can't see through the black when you're done.

That should give you a great chrome finish.

Alclad Chrome in a spray can ??? I've seen the SpazStix chrome in a rattle can.....
I've found that the lighter each coat is, the better the job turns out... There's no bleed through on masking, quicker dry times, no runs in the paint & just an overall even look to the color...
I used to paint rattle can bodies in about 2-3 hours.... lol
Your definately better off taking your time with either brush or can...
Good luck, & post some pics...

Yes I am......and the point is??? Not that I plan to start selling painted bodies, but I would like to venture into painting my own, it is more fun to do things yourself instead of paying someone to do it for you, but if I ever want a really nice body for show comp I'll probably buy one then, unless i discover some hidden talent with an airbrush LOL

I couldn't agree more Road Rage , i think doing the work yourself
is the only way to go!

Yea, just's gives you more pride in your ride knowing you did it yourself, besides I'm having fun with my new found hobby, though my wife says I am spending more money than she would like on my Savage............what can I say, I'm addicted LOL

By the way I am planning on useing the sivler backing for my candy purple paint.........thanks again for the advise Candyman!
