Not dumb, just inexperience. I don't know what mine is set at but after you realized that you loosened the wrong screw and you re-tightened the top screw, did you mess with the lower screw? If not, check to make sure that your SLIPPER clutch is not too loose. I had the same problem with mine after a pretty intense rebuild/upgrade session which included a spur gear among many other things. The book says to tighten the spur gear nut up all the way then back it off 1/2 turn but mine is now set to around 1/4 turn or a hair less and that took care of it for me. Same symptom, no shift to second gear....different clutch. I new it was the slipper clutch because I couldn't get it to climb over a 6"x 6" landscape timber which was never a problem in the past.

hey thanks
i got it working better but it still wouldnt shift into second so ill try that....thanks for the help and happy new year

Ok one quick question that has been playing through my mind is which way is considered closed?? I have been guessing that if you screwed the screw clockwise till it stops that is closed???

Hold on a sec here guys. I think we're talking about two different things.
Drummer's original question was talking about the factory settings for the two speed clutch. I'm not sure now if asking for the settings for the carb, or still trying to get the settings for the 2 speed clutch. I looked through my manual and can't find the factory settings for the clutch.

Drummer, if your going to adjust the carb, you might want to take a look at HPI's FAQ page. The low speed needle's adjustment works off of the idle screw adjustment. The FAQ page gives a good explanation on how to do that adjustment.

Factory for the 2 speed is 4.5 turns out; if I'm not mistaken. Turn it clockwise till it stops, then counter-clockwise 4.5 turns. You still may need to do some adjusting after this...

No problem. I'm used to being confused so I tend to recognize it sooner?
