When I try to start the engine using the easystarter controller, it starts to turn the engine over then the electric starter motor disengages and spins free... Repeated attempts sometimes works ( the starter stays engaged and the engine turns over ).

Anyone here had this experience and know the magic solution? :\

Thanks,

well, from what you've told us so far it seems you can clear the starter motor itself from being the problem. if it spins when the engine is and isn't turning over then you either have a problem with the gears within the ez start or you could have stripped the one way bearing on the backplate of the engine. If it's stripped and can spin both ways it won't turn over. i just had a friend have this same problem on a savage roto start and it was in and out for a little while then it just stopped working all together meaning it the roto start wasn't engaging to turn the engine over. take the three screws that hold the ez start on the back plate off and then, either get the bearing inside off the shaft that comes through the backplate or out of the ez start case. sometimes they stay in the case and sometimes they stay on the shaft. spin it both ways, if it only spins one way then it isn't your problem and you should check the gears inside the ez start. if it spins both ways, there's your problem and it's an easy cheap fix. hope this helped...

Runaway Jim is dead-on 9 out of 10 times though the OWB is just dirty. You can take it out clean it with WD40 and give it a try.

Gratuitous thanks guys!

Washing the OWB with copious amount of WD-40 did the trick (for now at least)... Lubed the old one with motor oil like the instructions for the new one suggests and put it back on the input shaft and tested by hand. Then again with the EZ-start controller once it was re-assembled.

Jason_v has smaller fingers than his old half blind dad, so he got to do most of the Removal/Replacement work. It is his car after all... ;)

I picked up a new replacement just the same, and we'll be prepared if/when this happens again.

Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge/experience! :)

OWB is a good spare part to keep around. They will eventually go out and they're cheap enough to have an extra.

Good to see you're working on it yourself, that's the best way to learn. And thank ol dad for helping out too. :D
