Yeah. It is all the way over here too. Just south of the I-96/I-69 highway. Thank goodness. I don't know what I would do with out my AC. No one knows what happened yet. Or at least they aren't saying anything yet. I am just suprised how much this one item took out. This is one huge grid!!!

I'm lucky! It didn't hit my house. Hit everywhere else around me. It's chaotic in NY. Emergency management(I'm an Aux. Police Officer) just called me in to block off the entrance to NY from Linden. I feel sorry for all those people with out any Ac, it's 95 plus over here. :flamer:

Not only is there no AC, there's no regular TV! Thank God for satellite.

Well - we JUST got power on back here! FINALLY! 6 hours or so down.

It was pretty awesome too! The sound that came through the electric lines was pretty 'buzzful'

Glad to see ya back online. First thing I thought about when I got home and heard about the blackout was you, and if you had your stuff charged. But then again, if it's dark outside, how would ya drive anyway.

I hope that the grid gets back online soon for everyone here. It'd take about 2 hours and I'd have the shakes from RCNT withdrawls.

Well that really sucked.... No AC, computer, TV... I set up a small generator I had for my camper to run my TV/Satellite system & my wife comes runnin out & says.."Oh good, your hooking up the fridge to that, right?" Yes dear.....lol
Finally got juice around 3am....

Did you guys hear what caused this large power grid to go down? I heard something on the radio about a lightning strike to a power plant in Niagara Falls but some are denying that it happened. I never knew that the power grids in the US were that interconnected. The local news showed a really cool map last night that has the US divided with the large power grids.

There still is no real reason why it happened.

In regards to Niagra getting hit by lighting....The National Weather Service had no lightning recorded and the Niagra plant never shut down during this entire thing. So I doubt it. That butthead that runs Canada needs to get his facts straight before he opens his mouth. Anyhow, they are still trying to figure out what happened.

The reason for the grid and the multiple feeds is for redundancy purposes. Stands to reason, you want a bunch of places feeding one grid so if 1 or 2 go down, the rest can crank up the production and keep it live. That seems to be what happened yesterday, however, the overbearring load needed cause 21 plants to shut down because if they were to even attempt to create the jiggawatts necessary, they would have had a meltdown. They tripped like an overload on a circuit creating too much draw. They have shown proof though that the feed in Ottawa was first to drop and is what we were trying to make up for. So who knows....

The bigger problem is the MECHANICAL switching that was taking place. The infrastructure stems back to the 50's. This has got to go! Just like not to many people still have 1 circuit running their house with a screw in fuse, the electric feeds need to get with the times.

I'm pretty certain they will get the funding now and kick the environmental groups square in the ass so they can get it done.

Either which way, I had to sit at work until power came back up so I could bring live all the servers and conduct integrity checks of all of our data. Fortunately, ALL servers came up fine and ALL data was good! Over 1 Terrabyte all intact ;)

What do you mean by mechanical switching? I am guessing that it is all something that needs to be done by hand?

I was reading a story on Slashdot a few minutes ago with the same theory as you mentioned. With one plant going down and the others, that are almost at full load, tried to make up for the difference and started a cascading effect.

Mechanical as in not computerized. I'm sure a couple plants had Bubba flipping the switch.

The 8 or 9 nuclear plants that dropped were all computerized and I still can't figure out why they dropped.

I'm going to venture out on a limb here and say it was Bobbo and Bud sitting around with nothing better to do and made a bet how big the 'Arc' would be if they threw a wrench in 'Dem there wires'

LOL. Thanks for the info. :) After that story you mentioned about those huge power towers I gained a new respect for electricity.

Just think if this happened last week the bash would have been affected.
