Typically the more ports the more power at high rpm i.e. rb c5 ok low end and insane top end. The less ports the more low end power i.e. Novarossi P5, insane low end, with good top.
 
Ports are located on the sleeve and they are for adding fuel/removing exhaust. Basically what your engine needs to run.
