Kwong,

Looks like I have purchased the same engine that you had pinched recently. I have yet to break it in (tomorrow). This engine is so tight it locks up if I don't spool up the starter box before making contact on the flywheel.

What are your experiences with the Novarossi NS12S3A1 in your NTC3? I am putting it in my NTC3 as well but with a centax clutch. That's the only difference other than gearing.

Ah, nice pick for an engine. For starting, generally I try to give it kind of a running start. So it'll have 3/4 turn before it hits compression and that's usually enough to start it up for the first time. You might also try a bump starter. They've got more torque than a standard 1/10 starter box. I've found it'll start up with one even when it's stuck at TDC.

As for the engine. It's great. It's got gobs of low end torque. You'll definitely need to run some foams if you don't have some. Also i'd recommend gearing the car as high as possible. I've found the best results that way.

Tuning is quite touchy. Just make sure to watch the temps when tuning and don't let it go too lean. It absolutely HATES to run lean. Temps will shoot up really fast and it'll probably die on you. You have to stay on top on the tuning, but the rewards are great. And it does give you A LOT of feedback on the mixtures.

I first ran strictly 20% but have actually found since changing to 30%, that tuning is a little easier and it seems to just run better with 30%. Especially since it's a race engine and was designed for 30%.

Thanks for the quick response. This engine, as I said in my first post, will be going into my NTC3 as a backup racer for the 710 I'll be using strictly for racing ... so yes, I do use foams (40sh front/35-37 sh rear). I would love to gear it high for optimum speed but as I said, I will be racing it so I need to keep the gearing in a "middle ground" for track I will be runing on.

Now that you have mentioned the bump starter, I'll probably look around for one. The starter box I have, the pink mulit start ofna box (single high torque motor) is nice but it's nice to have options out there.

Thanks also for the insight on the tuning as well. Also, the fuel I'll be using is Byron's 20%. I'll get her nice and broken in first before I even think of going up to 30%.

Aren't you running a Rody Modified engine of some kind in the 710?

Anyhoo, keep me update on the engine. I'd really like to know how you like it. Let me know how the car compares to your 710 :)

The Rody X12 5port turbo WAS in my NTC3. It is completely trashed now. I caught the lip of a slight divit at a track I practice at and it went end over end, cartwheeled and barrel rolled for some 40 feet before coming to a rest (probably what your NtC3 looked like when you crashed) :marshall:. I broke the rear diff housing, shock tower and I thought that was it till last friday.

While I was priming it I noticed some fuel on the chassis, thought it was nothing. It ran for a few laps then dies. I tried restarting and when priming it, my brother saw fuel squirting from somewhere on the block. Thought it was the head that worked it's way loose. Upon further inspection, I cracked the block. Traced back the recent history of the car and realized I broke it during that awful spill the week before.

I have yet to get the 710. Just saving up a little bit more cash for the complete kit, engine and pipe (around 7 bills). Most probably by next weekend I'll have it. My brother (Sl0eg1n) and I will be running the same cars (NTC3 backup and 710 primary car) since we like both cars and parts will be easier to stock between the both of us. Currently, his 710 has a Mugen X12 long stroke (still being broken in) and his NTC3 has an RB V12 3port. I am leaning towards a Rody Roem V12 3port for my 710.

I would've had my 710 now if I didn't have to buy the new engine for the NTC3.

lol, sounds like you've been having no luck with onroads lately. It'll all change with the novarossi's. They're good luck...lol

Anyhoo, it amazes me that you actually managed to crack the block. Ususally it's just the cooling head.

BTW, how much did you get the novarossi for?

It was a very hard hit to the engine. I think it bounced a couple of times off the side of the head! Luck!?! teah, just got the clutch prob cleared and was looking forward to running with this Rody. I got it for free. Bonehead that owned it previously didn't know how to tune it. Showed on the piston as well, he was running it way too lean. Piston was black! but leass than a gallon through it.

I got the novarossi for at my LHS. They had it listed for $240 but since I'm sponsored by them, I got it at an excellent price. I won't devulge the actual price here on a public forum.

Diver, race engines are hard to start because they have higher comression than sport engines. Just heat it up with a heat gun to 200° F and it will turn over easy, which is most of the Steve Pond heat cycle process...
