Ok, first off I love my savage xl. It is probably the most durable Nitro cars I have owned. I hade a problem with my owb and I took it out cleaned it and it worked for a day and did it again. Spinning but not catching. I replaced it with a new one and it worked for about two tanks and its back to doing it again. I am running Gen II Byrons 20%. I sealed the back plate also. I am about to take it apart again and clean it soak it in some Denatured Alchohol for a couple of days and see if that helps. Any other suggestions.
 
You only need to slosh the bearing around in some DA and blow it dry. DA on a rag and wipe the shaft.
If you're still in the break in stage, loosen the glow plug to relieve some compression. As soon as it starts, spin it down with the ignitor, then remove it and snug it down.

Do you think its possible the Roto start back plate has a hairline crack in it I can't see? I considering replacing this also.
 
Doubtful. The OWB has a internal plastic cage that holds the needle bearings in place. Those crack and will cause constant slipping. Like Rolex said, you have to loosen the GP on cold starts or you will continue to break the OWB's.
The best way to clean an OWB is to cram a paper towel soaked in any kind of degreaser or D.A. Turn the paper towel around in the bearing until it comes out clean. apply some grease to the OWB shaft and put it back together. The grease will not make it slip, it will prolong the life of the OWB.
Also Byron's fuel has an extremely slippery oil in it. Every pullstart/rotostart engine I ever used it in made the OWB slip within a few tanks.
Switch fuels to Trinity MHP or Platinum. That fuel has never made my OWBs slip.
I do love Byrons fuel though, but I only use the Pro blend with 9% oil and only on bumpstart engines.

i just started using this fuel guess what? my OWB!!! should i switch fuels every tank and if so what should i run??:D
 
Don't switch fuels....The problem is that your engine (5.9K) has some crazy pinch and NEEDS to be preheated before starting for a while.

I've NEVER had my OWB slip using Byron's gen2 20% race in my STS .28 and its a very tight engine still at a little over a gallon and a half.

So clean that OWB and preheat the engine to 200F next time and you won't have a problem!

Thanks for the info. I'll tell ya though I will have to keep cleaning it because I have been running Bryrons for a long time, ever since way back when I was stupid enough to run certain BLUE FUEL and by far I have gotten the most engine life from using Byrons and the tunes are always consistent using this fuel....
