Just wondering if anyone knows if the porting and the clutch nut thread on the cranks are the same between the OS 18TM & TZ engines. I have the 18TM in my Revo now, but I am thinking about throwing the TZ in there. Instead of buying a new TZ and cutting the crank or using the short crank with a clutch nut adapter, I was thinking of buying a new TM crank and throwing it into the TZ engine. I called OS and the guy I spoke to said they were identical, i.e; porting, clutch nut thread, but he also seemed like he didn't want to be on the phone either. Kinda just answered me real quick and hung up. So before I drop another 2 bills on the TZ, I thought I'd ask in here.

i dont have an awnser to your question but

just curious why your ditching the tm for the tz ....if its for the extra power, from what I've read you wouldnt really notice much difference

Thanks vbgagnon. Are you sure about that? I hate to be a PIA, just want to make sure they are ported the same before I drop the cash and start swapping parts. Yes retarded pilot, the (little) extra HP and little higher RPM range. I've seen the TM323 and the Sirio in the Revo. Great engines, but a little much for racing. Rather stick to the SB class and not sacrifice controllability and/or reliability. Both the Sirio and RB are great bashing engines, but kinda hard to control on a track. Plus all that HP and torque, I'd rather not start breaking other things like diffs and the trans etc, etc. Just my opinion. :)

You're smart in staying with the .18 for racing, however I've run against a couple of TZ's and didn't notice too much. I know alot has to do with the driver but there was really no noticeable advantage with the TZ. As far as porting I'm assuming your talking p/s? In that case I know they are different part numbers but never held two sleeves side by side.

I've read on the grid that people are swaping the cranks so they don't have to bother modding the crank pin to run a starter box. If you want me to get some more concrete info let me know and I'll do some digging.

change the button to a turbo and you'll be fine. All internals are the same. It's just the turbo and std plug that makes the difference.

Thats what I thought too.

You are both correct. Its more than just the button. I believe the piston and sleeve is a bit diffrent too. Although its a direct swap into the tm. I am getting the TZ piston , sleeve and button soon . I will take some pics to compare for you guys.

Also the TZ is noticeably faster than the TM.

Yes. The porting of the TZ and TM SLEEVE are different. I'm not concerned with that. It's the porting of the crank that I am concerned with. I believe that (crank porting) and how the sleeve is ported is what determines the timming of a Nitro engine. The turbo plug (button) is used I believe to raise the compression of the engine. Feel free to correct any of this if it is wrong. I definately don't want to misinform anyone or be misinformed myself. I know there is not that much difference (HP wise) between the 2, but every little bit helps. I can get the TZ for a pretty good price from my LHS otherwise I'd be sending the TM to EB Mods or something and call it a day. I'm just trying to avoid the whole cutting the crank and getting a clutch nut adapter plus cutting the clutch shoes etc, etc thing to get the TZ to work in the Revo. I figure the TZ(P)-TX , TM crank, TM backplate, New Era mount, a little labor and I'm good to go. As for the bump box, that I can always deal with later on which would mainly be to rid of the one way bearing and the roto start. Less drag, less weight = more HP and one less thing to fail.

I'll second that. Although at this point I won't give up my RB TM, if I were to do it again for racing I would get an .18. The TM 323 is insane with power. And a lot of it is on the low end.
