RC Driving Style
Hello,
When I'm driving my revo 3.3, every once and a while it will stop and the red optidrive light will come on for about 5 seconds and then go off. Even with the batteries and everything charged up. Do you think its the optidrive?
RR21

On the 3.3, I believe the optidirve acts as a failsafe as well as keeping you from throwing it in reverse while going forward. You may be getting radio interference or your batts in your transmitter are getting low.

My batteries are completely charged and I'm just running at home by my self. Could it also be the reciever maybe?

You can try and reset the optidrive but really it's not a big deal. It most likely is picking up movement inside the tranny. IMO, if your smart enough to know better just take it out completely.

Are you talking about taking out the tranny or the optidrive. I've takin out the tranny before but never took it all apart. Do you knw of any aftermarket ones I'm gonna reset the optidrive tonight.
Thanks RR21

Take the optidrive unit completely out. As long as you are smart enough to not throw it in reverse whole going forward you will be fine. You will just need to pick-up a failsafe like the ofna or venom micro ones.

The optidrive sensor attached to the tranny senses if the tranny is moving forward. If it is, it does not allow third channel to put the tranny into reverse. If you remove it, you will need to plug the hole in the tranny so no dirt gets in.

Rob has it, remove the optidrive, just more gimicky stuff but a good thing for those new to rc and may not have it down. Though the optidrive isn't really a failsafe, it only gives you a low battery indication and will drop out at low voltage it does not protect you against loosing the transmitter or someone jumping on your channel.

So i dont need any of those wires???????

I think he is referring to the wires that attach to the tranny from the optidrive unit.

If you remove the wires from the tranny, you might as well remove the entire optidrive unit.

If you don't mind not having reverse, the Traxxas forward only conversion (FOC) is the way to go. It has everything you need with detailed instructions on what to do in the tranny and removal of the optidrive. It even provided plugs for the optidrive sensor hole in the tranny and the opening left in the radio box after you remove the optidrive unit itself.

Other benefits of FOC:
1) Stronger forward gears
2) Better punch (less rotational mass inside the tranny)
3) Weight savings
4) no micro servo to fail - trust me when they fail 90% of the time they shift into reverse while going forward.

Good boy! Now I might add, pay close attention to how the tranny and gears come apart, the directions, while pretty good and with many pictures, are a little difficult to see unless you can blow them up.

optidrive battery usage

Do you know how much battery the optidrive is consuming. Saving precious battery by removing it could be another advantage. I know what my next mod will be. Thanks guys
