WOW, ONE BAD DAY FOR ME...
Ok i took my Savage 4.6 out today so i can tune it. I can't!!!
Ok first of all my temperture is always high. I played with low and high speed needle and still.. Like If its Lean it heats up realy fast. Once i richen it out and blogs and barely gets to second gear still goes to about 200 around that but the performance sucks. And now when i go to brake and leave it on it just wants to shut off and It HEATS UP EXTREMELY FAST!!

wOW i had aa bad day today i feel like crap..
If someone could kindly help me out that would be great,,

can you give us some more info on the savage? how old or new is it? are these the break in tanks for the engine? how much past stock settings have you moved the needles?

The problem with the truck stalling is probably that you haven't set your idle speed correctly with your throttle trim at 0. So when you apply the brake, the idle screw is allowing the carb to close completey.

Hey, ok so its New about 1 month old. Break in done and I'm now in my 3rd gallon.. I actully havent kept much truck of how much I've moved the neeldles...But I KNOW I LEANED IT OUT FOR SURE cuz it was way rich when i got it

dont forget mido.. when ALL else fails.... go back to the stock setting!!! it works every time.. from stock setting, its easy to set the idle like charles says, adjust it with the break on.. then you can adjust the high speed needle....3 GALLONS!! sounds like your having a blast!! are you sticking with the same fuel? whenever i change fuel, it gets hot flashes and runs crazy.. also make sure your fuel is still good. what i mean by that is when you get to the end of the gallon, it is sometimes been exposed to alot of air wich can make your rig run hot. oh, and one more thing, i forget were you are, but here the weather has changed alot in the past month,if its the same for you, it is going to effect your tunning, so try to compinsate for the extra humidity.. sorry you had a bad bash session, but as the fisherman say.."a bad day bashing is always better then a good day at work"

i agree, go back to stock settings and adjust from there. you need a LIGHT touch when adjusting needles. alot of people disagree with how i tune engines but i tune by performance and not temps. I only use temps when breaking in. When i tune, i just listen to the engine and adjust accordingly. If i am reaching peak rpm too quick and i am lacking smoke, i richen up a hair, if it takes longer than i think is necessary to reach peak rpm then a lean it a little. I have never had a motor fail on me and i ran my nitro's pretty dang hard. I guess you just get a feel for it. you can smell and see when its running hot and richen it up. I refuse to settle for subpar performance just to keep my temps in "normal range" if i run a little hotter but my tires are spinning off the rim, i am a happy camper.

It seems logical but for a noob like me I will stick to temps until a get the hang of it. However I don't disagree with your methods.

flm_savage has it to a system, and that's the way I always tuned my own. The temp is just for a double check, but it's VERY important when you're new at tuning, and not really sure what you're looking for or listening to.

you mentioned being way hot, what was the temp reading? have you tried going to be to stock settings? I can't remember what they are for your engine, but i'm sure its in the manuel. as for the truck stalling, your carb spacing is definitely off. take your airfilter offer and with your radio trim at zero and throttle at neutral, how large of a gap do you have? most carbs work best at 1-2mm. if its smaller than that, set your throttle to full break with the transmitter and adjust until its at 1-2mm. that should keep your idle going. once you reset the needles to factory settings, move the high speed needle first and make sure you are getting plenty of blue smoke. oh, and remember settings a take a few minutes to set in. so run the truck for a few minutes before changing them.

Yesssssssssssssssssssssss!! Ok Thanks All I Got It Running At Maximum Performance. Btw I Went To My Lhs And He Was Telling Me Running Temps Are Between 240 To 270.. Is He Right? Also How Long Do Engines Usually Last (how Many Gallons) Using 20% Nitro And 12 % Oil...

It all depends on how you maintain it and take care of them. Make sure to use after run oil every time you run it, NEVER run without a fuel filter, and change your air filter after every hour of use, and many guys see 5 to 8 gallons easy.

wow that goes fast.. I've had my engine for month now and I'm on 3rd gallon..

lool ya i think ill take a break. but i think ill be replacing engine by the end of the summer at this raate!! Will the 5.9 fit in the savage 4.6?
