On board temp gauge

Not in my opinion. The on board temp gauges aren't as accurate as a handheld sensor that can actually point at the glow plug.

I don't really know how the on-board ones work. I have a hand held one, and I'm confident in using it, but I was just looking for some opinions on the on-board version

There's a wire loop that wraps around the head that is used to take the temp. Most of the people that I've talked with have had problems with them.

the thing with on-board gauges is they are not as accurate as a gun, like stated above, there is a wire that wraps around the bottom of the cooling head and takes the temp from there. i use venoms on-board gauges on my whips, but i also have an HPI gun to calibrate the on-board so i kno how much off it is....the only reason i use on board is because I've lost 2 handheld guns, if you are prone to losing your equipment or forgetting where u put it, id invest in a on-board,, but every r/c enthusiast should at least own a gun,, because u can use them for other readings as well..thats my 2 cents

I've got 2 Venom Smart temp fail-safes and they both work fine. As far as accuracy is concerned, I haven’t really checked, but I've seen a 10F discrepancy.

I monitor temps typically during the break-in period and occasionally after that. If the engine is running as it should, temps take care of themselves. When I had my Savage XL I got caught up in trying to achieve the "optimum" temperature and neglected to see that the engine wanted to run how it wanted to run; trying to control the temp was holding it back.

If you have no air leaks, and your HSN and LSN are set properly, the engine will run as it should and the temp will do what they will. I keep the smart temp on my trucks as insurance, so I set it to just over 300F. If my engine ever runs that hot, something's wrong and I need to check my tune or look for leaks.
