Fitted an 'Ace Outlaw race pipe' to my Savage 25 yesterday, and a big 'Motor Saver' air filter. It ran like a bag of crap afterwards so I started tweaking the mixture screws, assuming that it was just the increased engine breathing that had thrown out the settings...... I tried everthing till it went dark. Couldn't make it run right at all. I fitted the old exhaust back on today and it won't even start at all, it ain't even trying. I suspect I killed the glowplug running it with incorrect settings yeaterday. So I give up! It is going in to the local shop tomorrow for them to set it up for me. I just hope I haven't killed the damn thing.
Will let you know the verdict tomorrow....

Below is a quote from Nitroaddict
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"If there is one thing I have learned it is that every engine will start. There are only four things that make a nitro engine run:

Fuel
Air
Compression
Combustion

All of these things must be in effect to start. So lets check them out.

Fuel: Can you see the fuel going from the line into the carb?

Air: Is the carb opening, is the airfilter clean?

Compression: Is there compression? If it is a new engine you should be ok. You can check it by manually turning the flywheel with your thumb, it should be almost impossible to do.

Combustion: Have you checked the glow plug on the igniter while it is out of the car, and made sure it glows bright?

If all these things check out than it can only be one thing: You need to adjust the mixture of the fuel and air."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After you installed the new pipe and air filter did you try setting the engine back to factory settings and retune from there?

According to HPI the stock settings are

3 turns for LSN
3.5 to 4 turns for HSN

A link to HPI's instructions.

Thanks, I have checked fuel supply, it is fine. Compression is good too and the air cleaner is new. The only thing I can't check is the glowplug as all my tools are at work and I don't start back until Monday. I suspect I have killed the plug by getting it too hot, the shop said they will charge me a maximum of £15.00 (around $26 US) for getting it running and then tuning it for optimum performance, which I think is reasonable. At least then I know it will be right after that. (Hopefully)!!

Perhaps. But sooner or later you will need to know how to tune an engine on your own. Talk to one of the guys at the LHS and see if they will help you tune it or at least let you be there when they fix it so you can see what they are doing.

True. That's a good idea. I'll ask if I can stick around tomorrow and see what's what.

hate to say but that ACE pipe is crap... i personally haven't run it but I know a few peeps that did and it sucked... made the truck run all crappy

I've got an ACE pipe on my RC10GT...the engine I'm running is the Fantom .15. Low end isn't all that great with the pipe, but the top end screams.
It's a decent pipe if you're looking for top end. What I did about the low end was put an exhaust deflector over the stinger of the pipe to decrease the flow a bit, and that helped some with the low end.
For me it's an OK pipe.
What I had to do was richen up the HSN up some and it ran just fine.
BTW, the pipe is loud huh! (the exhaust deflector helped with the sound level too)

Just got back from my local shop. Tha guys there had a good laugh at the Ace pipe!!!
They sorted out my car, got it running sweet with the temperatures spot on, even adjusted my gearchange piont as it was too early. I bought a hotbodies tuned pipe from them, thay said it is one of the best. As for the Ace pipe, they reckon it mught be OK on a smaller engine but not on the Savage (definately not the 25!!).

Thanks,
Al
