I'll admit, from the get-go, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed! I'm trying to improve my overall engine knowledge, but the one thing I cannot figure out is the engine designation "codes" that O.S. uses for their engines. Can anyone tell me if the letters mean anything and, if so, what?

For example, there are four different .21 engines listed on the O.S. web page for cars and buggies. They are: .21 VZ-R Turbo II, .21 VZ-B V-Spec-T (P), .21 RG & .21 RZ and finally, the .21 VZ-B (P).

I hunted all over their web site to find a codebreaker for these designations and couldn't find one. Granted, my LHS is very helpful and has never steered me wrong, but I'd like to understand these things a little better.

If anyone can dumb this down for me, I'd be grateful!

All I know is that the "X" denotes a pull-start....maybe the "T" denotes "turbo engine"???

.21 VZ-R Turbo II - High end on road engine. non pullstart

.21 VZ-B V-Spec-T - Most powerful stock .21 engine on the market. non Pullstart

.21 RG entry level budget priced engine. Very durable and reliable. comes in both pull start and non pullstart.

.21 VZ-B engine had great power, but did not last. They had problems with this one from the get go.
.21 RZ very very good mill, but they don't make them anymore.

yeah there is not rhyme or reason to the letters they choose from what I see.....I usually look for the code in part numbers too as part of my job so I'm pretty good at it....O.S. looks like they just pick a cool sounding set of letters....I mean C'mon the VZ-b V-Spec-T sounds like a sexy little engine that goes doesn't it?

Plaidfish and vbgagnon: Thanks a bunch for the insight and information, it is appreciated. Do either know of a good resource, be it web or otherwise, to research engines for specific trucks? For example, is there somewhere I can go to determine what engines are compatible with a specific truck (i.e. Revo)? I guess I'm struggling to understand the differences in a similar size engine from the same manufacturer or how to find out what the differences mean. Make any sense?

Again, thanks a lot for the insight, I appreciate it!

I don't know about on the web, but you can search the revo section of this forum. Heres the deal with the revo and tmaxx, the take small blocks so any .18 or smaller engine will fit. They also make conversion kits, and speciality big blocks for the revo. The revo section of this forum would have the info for the larger engines that fit. From what I've been reading one of the best engines for the revo is the os .18TZ, apparently its the strongest small block built to date.

Yeah VB is right if you're looking for an engine for a Revo the OS .18TZ is nice.....as far as what will fit into what...the best place to look is on manufacturer's sites....if you have a Revo check the traxx-ass site....RC10GT, Associated....and so on and so on.......generally speaking 1/10th scale stuff take small blocks.....that would include most .12, .15 & .18 engines.....there are some .15 Big block mills but I don't think I've ever seen one......there's also some mid block engines or big blocks displacement in small block cases, like the OFNA .26 maxx engine or the RB .23 and the Picco P2....... 1/8 scale (buggy, MT & some onroad) will take big blocks .21, .25, .26, .27, .28, .30 & .32......there's other sizes I'm sure but those are the most common.......generally speaking the .21 is the race engine for buggies and on-road 1/8 scale....MTs (Monster Trucks) run all the real big engines for the low end torque......when you want a new engine for your RC search the forum for suggestions on the RC your looking at replacing the engine in....if there's no comments on a specific Engine then ask the Forum.....hope that clarifies some stuff for ya....

Thanks again fellas, I appreciate it! I've heard a lot about the O.S. .18 TX as well, so when the stock engine starts to fade (or I simply get bored of it) and the funds are ample, I think I'll put one in!

One final question. What does the 2.5 refer to on the Traxxas engines? I know they are .15 engines, but I've been asked that before and I really haven't understood the designation.

Thanks again!

I thought it meant only 2.5 hours of run time till you get fed up and replace it. :)

I had some ignorant ass try and argue w/ me about that being the HP rating.....I had to stop talking to them before I lost my head......

Monkey, I put an RB 323 (.23) in my Revo. Fun if you bash, but a little too much if you plan to race. Go with the OS 18 or similar.
