i have an ntc3 team kit which i assembled and installed an os cvr .12 engine. i was having problems at first cause i could not figure out whether or not the 2 speed was working so i went to the hobby store where the guy told me that since it used 2 clutch shoes so i would not be able to hear the shift point unless i paid really close attention. well he tweaked on it and showed me, i saw the tires when it would hit the second gear (while holding it in the air) i could see the tires bubble out, so i guess the two speed is working, and the guy at the store told me that it was working now. i got home and ran it and the speed looked the same. i am using the stock clutch bell and spur gears that came with the kit (22, 26 on clutch bell and 50, 54 on the spur)so i was wondering what is wrong cause to what i hear this thing should be flying and its really not. some people say that it could be that my engine might not be reving up high enough or something like that but my temps are 220-230 deg. sorry this thread is so long but i really want to see my car run how it should can someone help.

maybe my clutch bell and spur gears is what is doing it. here are my options clutch bell; 20-27 spur gear; 48,50,52,54. have any of you played around with the gears what was your outcome. i want decent low end and super fast high end.

Okay, first off, whether you're using a 2 clutch, or 3 clutch shoe setup, it won't make a difference on whether you hear the 2 speed shift or not. When it shifts WAY too soon, then you won't be able to hear it.

There are certain engines like my novarossi ns12s3 that have super low powerbands, and you can't hear the car shift gears...but for your application, you should be able to hear the car shift.

One thing you might try doing is first tighten up the 2-speed's clutch springs to max. Back it out 2.5-3 turns. Start up the car, then pick it up. very slowly give it gas letting the rpm's go up every so gradually...at some point you should hear the rpm's drop a little. Then you'll know it's shifted. Make note at how the rpm's sounded. If it shifted rather low, then you probably need to tighten up the clutch spring about an 1/8 turn. Keep working it until you have to give it about 1/2-3/4 throttle and it shifts.

Now, if you don't hear it shift at all when you give it throttle holding the car, then you'll need to back out the clutch springs about a 1/4 turn until it starts to shift. Then do the steps above.

Okay, assuming you've got it shifting a decent RPM, you'll now want to start driving the car around and see how it's shifting. One thing to look at is how fast it's going before it shifts. If you hear it just maxing the rpm's and not really accelerating anymore right before it shifts, then you'll want to back out the clutch spring an 1/8 turn until it shifts. What you want is a smooth transition between gears with the acceleration being steady. Definitely try to keep the engine within the powerband at shift point. And don't have it completely just topping out before the shift point because you're just wasting a good thing and you won't get up to speed nearly as fast.

That pertty much summed it up, I have a couple of ntc3,-okay one is my g/f. But anyways, My pro kit had the same prob. I tried everything kwong2001 mentioned and and some ideas form a couple of members from this great site. Sorry that I can't remember everyone's name but thankx. To no avail. Your probs might lie in your 2-speeds clutch springs. I assembled my pro kit which of course had brand new springs, and when running would not shift. I tried everything from a 2 z with no prevail. Until I changed the clutch springs. Wham second gear at the factory settings . You might what to look into that. That might be your prob too. I think we both might of made the same mistake when we put are trans togther, the instructions are really not to clear on the the tranny part.- You probably remeber the part about tighting the shoes on the shaft not to tight to seperate the shoes but tight enough to keep them from rocking. That were the spring could come into damage. The spring are real small and could be damage easily by over tighting. And even more when you drive the car around trying to figureing it out. When I removed mine they were bent up pertty bad, after two tanks trying to figure whats going on. Once replaced , and carefully setting it to factory settings bam second gear. And that with stock gearing that came with the car. I run the novarossi mt12 and my g/f runs the os 15cvx. both no probs hearing the shift. Check my gallery if you want. new pic of the v2 rear end and carbon fiber pic coming soon. Hope this helps

Drive your car at about 70% power and you should here the shift as opposed to wide open. I did that with mine when I wasn't sure if it was shifting and the shift can be heard much easier at a mid throttle setting. I've also switched from the 50 / 54 to the 48 / 52 gears and the thing flies. :smoke:

how fast should i be going if i have the 27 clutch bell and 48 spur on the second gear with an os .12 cvr? cause i think i am about 40- 45 and to what i hear all these people saying that their cars are like 60 mph - 98 mph. that engine does 35000 rpm and thats pretty high compared to the ae .12. i just bash so i really want to go fast to show off.

Well i'm geared as high as possible and did 60mph in my neighborhood. That was probably doing about 25k-30k rpm.

i just wanted to let everyone know that i got a cop to clock my car it ran 41 mph. the conditions were not very great though it was an heb grocery parking lot it was very bumpy, my tires were bald, and my car was just bouncing around it seemed that the longer stretch i gave it the faster it would go. the p-lot was about 100-125 yards so i think with a longer, smoother area i should be flying. also my two speed was set 5 turns out on the black screws so i went to 3-1/2 turns like the manual said, i havent tried it after that adjustment though. i am very satisfied, my temps were 240 deg. what do yall think, any comments?

If you were 5 turns out, then you were never shifting. Your car just jumped into 2nd gear off the bat. If 3 1/2 is the starting point according to the manual, start there with your adjustments. Remember, the more you turn it in, the later the shift will be to get into second. The more you turn it out, the quicker the shift point.

When adjusting your shift points, don't try to stay in first too long. You should aim for a 20-30 foot shift point. Then again, that's just my preference because of the track that I race at, here in NY.
