When I run those, I ususally put the female end (lower left in the pic on tower) toward the carb.
 
It doesn't matter which way it goes on at first but then after keep it that way. Then because if you flip it over then all of the stuff you trapped will go stright into your engine....Nick
 
I love that filter. Built for mooks. When you clean it after using it you should run some fuel through both the filter casing and the filter element as well.
 
The screen should be on the motor side of the fuel line. Good luck.
