RC Driving Style
Just picked a new P5 motor 2 weeks ago and decided to put it into my 1/8th scale buggy since I had time this evening. Installed it into my buggy and tried to fire-it up for the break-in process. It turned over for about 4 seconds and then all of a sudden, it seized. Tried to turn it over again and noticed that the flywheel wouldn't even move. Took the motor out and tried to turn it by hand, it wouldn't move. Took off the back plate, and noticed small pieces of metal. Took of the head and sleeve and it still didn't rotate. Removed the piston/rod, and one side of the piston was toast :(. Has this happened to anybody else breaking-in P5 novarossi motors ??
 
That's interesting and doesn't seem normal, did the instructions say at all about pre-heating the crankcase? That would've been a good idea. However if you can contact Novarossi (Or Trinity) about it and hopefully they can send you a replacement motor or a deal on replacing the piston, rod & sleeve.

Kuma: That was going to be my next move. I hope trinity can do something about it, but from what I heard from my buddies, trinity's customer service isn't that good. But its worth a shot.
 
what do u mean the one side was toast ? top of the piston black on the ex side ?


and my p5 took a few tanks before it would turn over without locking up at tdc
 
My Sirio .21 SR was like that. I had to heat the block with a blow dryer every time I wanted to start it for almost damn near a half gallon. The enigne was tight as a ....................the small pieces of metal are a deffinte problem though.

On the ex. side :(
 
if the piston is just black and there is not metal anywhere, there is nothing to worry about then, thats normal..

But what about the metal? "Metal pieces" that are not engine components is a VERY bad thing.
 
durrrrrrrrrrrh, how in the hell did i miss that one.. thanks hum, ya metal pieces in engines = bad thing !!!

I had that problem with a heli engine. OS50sxh

The metal pieces were from the crankshaft rubbing against the rear engine case. That engine siezed up good and proper. i sent it back to OS Japan who replaced the relevant pieces. Now it runs well.

It might have been caused by my mistake. I may not have installed the fly wheel properly, causing pressure on the shaft, making it rub against the rear engine case, causing alot of metal shavings.

OS's service was fantastic.
